I thought Kaharu Chō's name looked kind of odd and suspected this might be a non-Japanese name. Checking the exact kanji, this person has been credited in Metropolis as Xiang Chun ZHAO (had to re-enter the name so the family name is "Zhao": there are likely many Chinese names in the Metropolis entry that need to be reordered but I haven't got to them), and for a studio that is apparently in China in that instance. Trying to check for some more recently romanized credits, I looked at FUNimation's credits for Eden of the East episode 3, and there it is indeed "Xiangchun Zhao", the only Chinese name among the 2nd key animators. Looks pretty firm that this person isn't Japanese so the Japanese name is wrong, and I'll be adding the credits to Xiang Chun Zhao.
I've noticed the Tamayura Hitotose credits consistently list three-kanji Japanese and non-Japanese credits in different ways (the Japanese names always have a space between family and given name there, while non-Japanese names do not), and there are several other people with what I expect are "fake Japanese names" for Chinese or Korean people. I'll probably be checking some sources on some more of them as I have the time. |
