I was wondering if anyone had seen the films "The Red Spectacles" or "Stray Dog". I know very little about these films except that they are directed by Oshii and seem to be related to Jin-Roh. I really loved Jin-Roh, so I was wondering if these films are worth checking out. Since Jin-Roh wasn't actually directed by Oshii, I'm not expecting them to be exacally like it. While a good director, even visionary at times, Oshii can sometimes get caught up in the ideas behind his films and forget about refining the actual plot. So can anyone say anything about these films? Oh yea, any information on his other film "Avalon" would be appreciated as well.

I've seen Avalon and Ritual (I met the actress / author of Ritual this past weekend at Fantasia).
And I own Red Spectacles and Stray Dog, but haven't watched them yet.
I'll write up some comments abour Avalon and Ritual a little later.

I know this has nothing to do with this thread but can someone tell me the live action movie thats similar to "Wings of Honneamise". I heared that there is this american movie that has many similar moments to WOH and was made before the anime.
Also, I've seen AVALON in Blockbuster and it looks kinda B-movie. Maybe its good and I'll rent it one day when I got nothing to do.
Thanks

I believe that would be The Right Stuff, a movie about the Marcury 7 space program. I haven't seen the movie, so I can't recommend it.

I've seen almost all of Oshii's live action (haven't gotten around to watching Talking Head yet), and The Red Spectacles is probably the best thing he's ever done. It's actually very little like his other work (no philosophical conversations, moves quickly, rather bizzare) and is closer in tone to movies like Brazil and Eraserhead. Stray Dog is a prequel that covers Koichi Todome's exile, and it's not exactly heavy on the plot. Similar to Lost in Translation, but not as good. But it's still worth seeing. Outside of the premise, neither of them really have anything to do with Jin-Roh, which was very loosely adapted from Oshii's Hellhounds comic book. Apparently the entire story was rewritten with new characters, and the original formed the backstory to the two live-action films. But I've never been able to find out, since Dark Horse only ever issued it in single issues, which have now gotten hard to find.
Avalon is good, but also very Oshii. I do like the way the entire film was digitized. Makes the CG effects seamless.
I saw The Right Stuff a really long time ago. I remember that I liked, but not much else.

I'm for one am not a fan of his live action films. They are all fairly similar in style but the budget differences are noticable between films. Avalon is IMO the best of the lot, but once again I would recommend this to Japanese live action fans (Dead Alive, Testuo, etc) rather than to Oshii fans. If you think Avalon is a B-Movie than, with it's mono sound and a large percentage black and white footage the Red Spectacles would be a C-Movie. BTW the Right Stuff is an awesome film which has been released in DD5.1.

Avalon hands down. Kinda like the Eastern Bloc atmosphere and the use of a ton of Russian Armaments (the Dragunov SVD used by Ash was great) and Equipment.

I didn't consider Avalon a b-movie. Just a confused movie. I still wanna see the Bandai stuff though.

I've seen the BAndai box set and Avalon. I like them all. TAlking Head is really informative of making of anime. And has some really interesting theories in it about anime..

Looks like I've gotta get TRS then. So Should I see that or stray dog first?

See The Red Spectacles first. Stray Dog isn't self-contained (it ends with Todome returning to Japan) and is more there to fill in some of TRS's backstory.
