Well, they're not necessarily complex, but they're some of my favorites.

Balla, you really need to watch Rurouni Kenshin TV. My avatar is one of the villains (at one point)/anti-heroes.

Two of my favorite characters are Shinomori Aoshi (my avatar) and Shishio Makoto (the guy at the end of Tsuioken-hen is the replacement Hitokiri Battousai).

Their agendas are really easy to see and not very complex at all, but their personalities and characterstic fortidtude are what make them so great. Shocked

My favorite vilian isn't a complex one but a silly one: James from Pokemon. He stupid, he crossdresses (well he used to) and his Pokemon is a pain in the neck, literly. My other 2 are Mimet from Sailor Moon S and Freeze from Corretor Yui. FYI when Animerica printed the letters of who is your faovrite Vilian (Mar. and Apr. 2004) mine was printed under the title "I Like 'Em Bad and Stupid" the funny thing is they spelled my last name wrong. It's Iveli not Ivei incase any read it.

Just like Tony K. said, my favorites are also Makoto Shishio, and Aoshi, Shinomori. Aoshi could be a whole other story by himself. He is a great character and both of their characteristics make them interesting. They each have a story behind them that makes you get attached to them.

I am torn between two different villians.

The first would have to be Viscious from Cowboy Bebop. He just takes villiany to the next level of coolness. I think he is a fairly complex character, we don't get to see to much of his psyche, but we know there's alot brewing underneath. Since he used to be Spike's partner, we know he must have been pretty awesome (in an evil sort of way), but we never are able to fully understand the conflicted relationship between Spike and him.

For the second villian I must name Dornkirk from Escaflownespoiler[I love the notion that Isaac Newton traveles to Gaia and becomes an emporer and then an arch-villian. Physicists will destroy the world.; Twisted Evil (if you don't understand that last comment, you can just look at my profile)]

Hm.. if I had to pick one, it would be Malik Ishtar or the Raphael from Yu-Gi-Oh!

Malik/Dark Malik: spoiler[He honestly believes he is doing the rigth thing by freeing his people from the slavery of the Pharaoh. He forces Yugi to endure the same torture he and his people felt; by hunting down and torturing/killing Yugi's friends and forcing Yugi to kill his best friend. Then he plans to rape his own sister just so she can experience pain he feels and to punish her for trying to stop him, along with killing his brother

Mainly because he feels he is doing the right thing for his people, which he is]

Raphael: spoiler[He was stuck on a deserted island after a storm destroyed the cruise ship he and his family were on. His family was killed and he started to go insane and thought about killing himself. After 3 years he was rescued and became famous: even then, he questioned what fate was and why it took his family away from him. Dartz came to him to hire him to find out about fate and Raphael tried to kill Yugi; because he and Raphael were much alike, being that they both have no one left in the world to care for them.

He relies on his own power to finish the jobs he is assined and doesn't accept Dartz' offer to power him up. He's one of those noble villian-types.

Then when he finds out it was Dartz who killed he family he was horrified and tried to correct his wrongs by taking out Dartz and was killed for it. So he befriends Yugi in the end, reminding him that they are both alike. Yugi corrects him saying they both do have people who care for them, their friends.]

Any main Rurouni Kenshin villian can fit in this spot.

And people wonder why everyone wanted the "uncut" version. You may as well throw Max Pegasus J Crawford in there as well. spoiler[After all, as a hapless lover trying to cheat death and revive his beloved wife Cecelia "You're Breaking My Heart" Pegasus, he can't be all bad. (And I bet no one got the nickname)] In fact, most, if not all the main protagonists in Yu-gi-oh are pretty complex.

In terms of complex, he probably isn't, but in terms of a bas@$$ villan, I'd have to go with the OVA version of Kagato. He's just friggin ruthless, and ever-so gentlemanly all the while. He's just a textbook good bad guy.

Why not go with the grand-daddy of all "Villains we love" - Char Aznable.

Let's face it, here we have everything; Idealism, betrayal, unrequited love, shattered dreams, disillusioned vision, lack of faith in humanity, genocidal tendencies, belief in racial supremacy, and an incredibly subversive and charismatic personality.

No wonder he's the blueprint for just about every other anime villain since 1979.
