Hi everyone. I'm just wondering if anyone out there is into collecting all the manga that Clamp has created, regardless of the manga's genre (i.e. romance, kids' stuff, arena battles, sci-fi, or apocalyptic themes). So far I've read Angelic Layer, Suki, Wish, Rayearth, Cardcaptor Sakura, Man of Many Faces, Clamp School Detectives, and a couple of volumes of X/1999. (But there's so much more out there! ) If you've read several Clamp works, which genre do you think they excel at? And which series do you think has their "best" artwork? Do you prefer the highly detailed art of Rayearth and X/1999, or the sparser artwork of more recent titles like Angelic Layer and Suki?
One more thing: does anyone know a good site with info on the group Clamp in general (not just for a specific Clamp work)? I can't find a site that gives a detailed biography on these talented ladies, or a complete list of their works. Oh, and future apologies if this is a topic that has already been brought up in the forum! |

My favorite clamp title(s). X/1999 and Tsubasa. I thought Tsubasa had the best artwork. And I like detailed artwork. Oh and search google for CLAMP.

Personally, I don't really know what genre they're good at. I want to say shoujo, but many of their shoujo push the boarders to what shoujo is that I don't even know if I should call them shoujo. I'm saying this mainly because I'm trying to figure out what XXXholic goes under. Out of genre, I think they're best at stories that go very deep, or have an unexpected ending. Ex: X, Chobits, Rayearth.
For their best artwork, I think X and XXXholic. I think both are the best examples done by the two different artist of clamp. Mick Nekoi did XXXholic, which has me visually stunned. It's just so gorgeous, and their sparse use of screen tones just amazes me. It's very rare to find a manga that uses pretty much no screentones and just focuses on solid black for shading. Mokona Apapa, the main CLAMP artist, has done the most CLAMP art, and I believe X is her greatest work. It's one of those works where, since it is over 10 years old, you can see her style evolving. The later X art is just amazing. I'm not sure exactly which artist has done which manga, it's kind of confusing for me, and I haven't learned to tell which one does what. All I know if for sure Nekoi does Gouhou Drug, and XXXholic, while Apapa does X, and Tsubasa. If you guess on most of the past works, Apapa is most likely to of done the art. For a complete, and updated list of their works, you can go to www.clamp-net.com If you click on the works link in there, you'll go to a list of all the things they ever did. It's in Japanese, but if you put it through an auto-translator, or know the titles of their works in Japanese, you should do ok. They have little pictures of everything they've done there. This is kind of old, but it has a lot of good info: http://www.sandg-anime-reviews.net/text/clamp.inf Another interview I've found intresting: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Ginza/8017/clampart.html A list of names of the other artist from when they were an 11 person team: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Flats/3319/ Another interview and more in-depth information: http://www.puupuu.org/index.php?page=mshrine%3Aclamp%3Abio&lang=en |

Thanks littlegreenwolf for all the sites! I especially liked http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Ginza/8017/clampart.html.
The Babel fish translation of the entire official Clamp site didn't really work, so I just had to cut and paste certain paragraphs into it. I'm still open to anyone else who wants to share their thoughts on Clamp. |

I adore CLAMP!
X is my favorite, although they haven't written anything for the last year (and counting). That's just plain evil. At this rate, there won't be an ending for another 10 years. O_O I've read...too much to count. CardCaptor Sakura, Maho Kishi Rayearth, Tokyo Babylon, Miyuki-chan, 20 Menso ni Onegai, CLAMp Campus Detectives, Chobits, Wish... They akways write the best plot twists (Zagato and Emeraude, espcially) and I love the symbolism of their artwork in X. I also enjoy the fact that, despite their "children" audience, they add in lots of...interesting undertones to their stories. |

For the record, xxxHOLIC is a biseinen manga (it ran in a biseinen magazine er... Young Champ? Ionno, something like that).
CLAMP happens to be one of my favorite mangaka and lately, they've been branching out into way different plots and whatnot. I like Tsubasa and xxxHOLIC, but I must say that I really miss the CLAMP of yore. |

I like them a lot too. When I first got into anime, I was suggested to check out Rayearth, so I bought the OVA(or at least most of it ). I'm not entirely sure when I became aware of them, or what I read first, but I generally like their titles. I've read Chobits in its entirety, a little of Rayearth, most of what's availible of X/1999 here(my favorite of their's), some of Wish and a bit of XXXholic. I've skimmed others, but I've read so much manga, its hard to keep track. I like their detailed art the most but am not adverse to the more laid back art of their other works. The only problem I've had is the gaps between X/1999 volumes makes it easy to fall out of. Its so character driven that you really need to read it volume to volume otherwise it seems like nothing happens.

I love CLAMP's work, but it's the re-release of Cardcaptor Sakura under Tokyopop's 100% authentic label that I love.

I collected the Cardcaptors and I'm going to get the Magic Knight Rayearth. I've read Angelic Layer and Chobits too. I think that Chobits has the best artwork. I dunno. But I know that CCS, Chobits, Angelic Layer and Magic Knight Rayearth all have the same head artist.

I have been meaning to, but I've never read a single CLAMP title. -.- I feel like such a baka. So what should I start with? I like just about any type of manga, so long as there's no junk like female nudity ><. Well, not a lot of it. I ca put up with some, but not a large amount.

I LOVE ccs! In fact, my very first manga was a special edition Card Captor Sakura boxed set. Ever since I got it, I've been as crazy over manga as I am over anime. I want to read Wish and Chobits too!

I've read all of Wish, Magic Knight Rayearth, 4 mangas of X in Japanese, some of the CCS manga. I have the first Suki too. I don't know if I have any more of their works.
I've seen all of X TV and Card Captor Sakura. I really liked the first volumes of Tsubasa and XXXHolic. |

Just bought xxxHOLIC, Tsubasa and Shirahime Syo
While the former are good, I don't think they're quite as good as CCS. Graphically there're excellent, but I think the stories need a bit of time to evolve, well more than CCS did. Shirahime Syo - Snow Princes Syo - is a superb piece of manga art. A good story wrapped in beautiful imagery. I can't recommend it to everyone, but I will suggest you take a look at this title. |
