Super sentai (Power Ranger type) shows have been seen, yet few have been done anime style.Shinesman is probably the closest thing to a super sentai anime series.

Can anyone offer an opinion?

I don't really have much of an opinion on it, but wouldn't shows such as Sailor Moon be considered sentai?

Ok... so Sailor Moon doesn't have the giant robots. But if it did, it would be sentai...

What about Voltron? That one has the giant robots and color coded team members.

Ooooo! Magic Knight Rayeath! It has the color coded team mebers, AND giant robots! ... But there's only 3 team members. Would that still count? ... well.. they're on another planet when the bad guys are trying to take over the world most of the time... *thinks about this*

Hmm. Well now that I think about it, maybe Gate Keepers can sort of apply to this.

A bunch of teenagers with super powers defending the earth (from Japan) from the ever so terrorsome threat of the "Invaders." Although the only problem is the main character is the only person with a giant robot/mech. There are some other allies that help him, but they're not a part of the main group.

And as for costumes, though they're not as flashy as Power Ranger attire, all of the members attend the same school and have coinciding color palletes for their uniforms. I think they wore blue and white. Rolling Eyes

They don't transform either, so there goes that problem. But I think the overall theme might work.

I believe what I was thinking of was anime versions of the live action SuperSentai shows.Like I said,Shinesman comes pretty darn close to be one.

As for the other shows mentioned,In shows like Voltron or Mazinger Z,the focus is on the robot itself, while in the supersentai shows, the robot is merely the team's last resort.

Shows like Sailor Moon don't even come close.

The term "sentai," meaning "task force," refers to a team of color-coded, costumed superheroes - generally five - who battle a sinister presence bent on conquering the world with hordes of generic foot soldiers and weekly monsters. But although sentai dates back to 1975's Goranger, its traditions have themselves been borrowed from prior works within the Japanese category of filmmaking known as tokusatsu.

So WHY isn't Sailor Moon sentai? Or to you do there HAVE to be giant robots? Acording to http://www.rovang.org/sentai/origins.htm not all sentai have to have giant robots. Did Kamen Rider have giant robots?

Super Sentai animes are popular, but few of them are produced now, probably lack of funding. The ones that have succeeded like Gransazers can find a solid audience and can spawn many sequels.

Same here! Shocked

Even in the 70s there's "Power Rangers".

http://www.super-sentai.net/sentai/

Latest Super Sentai series: Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger

This site is very reliable when it comes to the Super Sentai series, no exceptions. Other series that you think as a "sentai" would fall into other categories such as Tokusatsu, Metal Heroes, or even Kaijuu series.

I don't think there'd ever be a super sentai series in anime (except for some parodies like Excel Saga, Hare Nochi Guu, etc).

GoLion/Voltron is the same formula

There are tons of them. Sentai's formula is used to tell simple stories cheaply. With animation you're freed from the limitations
