I tend to be a fan of Anime with supernatural elements based in Japanese Myth and legend. Some examples are X, Blue Seed, parts of Gasaraki, most Miyazaki works etc. I don't tend to like such shows that are too silly or are "dumbed down" (at least on this type of show). Inu Yasha borders on this. Any recomendations?

Inu Yasha is a big one, but I don't know if you'd call it dumbed down.

You might like Arjuna. It's pretty heavy on the Shinto stuff.

Not really. There aren't many animes with a strong Shinto Buddhist theme these days. A lot of the animes tend to be more sci-fi or love/comedy. Escaflowne was an anime with a strong fantasy/magic theme but it was not Shinto Buddhist. Gasaraki's was more of the Noh theater drama theme. But I guess that art form, being as old as it is and quite closely tied to the traditional Japanese religious belief system in Shinto Buddhism, you could say the two were linked in some way or another. I really can't think of any animes with a strong Shinto Buddhist theme. Other than one or two very old animes with the ghost-hunting plot maybe, but I can't remember the names. |

Nature spirits aren't Shinto? I must have my religions messed up. Stunk pretty heavily of Shinto to me.... but I've been wrong before, and might be again. |

Shinto has it's roots in Buddhism. It originated from India, spread to China and from there, to Japan and Korea about the same time.
I'm not a Buddhist myself but nature worship doesn't seem to fit in to the scheme of things in Buddhism. But of course I could be wrong too. Who knows how much the religion could have been changed to adapt to cultural differences between nations. |

You may have mixed up Buddhism with the Chinese religion/belief system of Taoism. I think that in Taoism, they worship lots of different gods, including nature gods like the god of the earth (lots of them, each looking after their own locality) and so on.
I know even less about Taoism. So who am I to comment on this.... |

You're absolutely right about that. I didn't know that Shinto and Buddhism were two distinct and different religions. Buddhism, having been around for so long in Japan, probably got mixed and intermingled with Shintoism (or whatever it's called). Like what's being said at that website, most Japanese believe in both religions. But there are some differences it seems. That's a good site. |

Its interesting. I am doing an Asian Studies degree, and I have asked Japanese students if they can seperate the different aspects of their spirituality. I haven't found one yet that could tell me what was Shinto or what was Buddhist or what was some other local custom. The Chinese are often the same way, excpet swap in Daoism.
Anyways, to get back to the topic.... Umm, how about Kai Doh Maru, thats an old legend. Did you get your hands on the Blue Seen OVA? |

You mean Blue Seed? I thought it was all about monsters and so on. Don't have it but probably should go buy it. Is it good? |

You might wanna go with CPM's Sprit warrior, (AKA Peacock king Kujaku) Takemgami and maybe, just maybe shoruyuden.

Phantom Quest Corps' theme song (at least the english dub) suggests that it will be a shintoesque ghostbusting show, since it's about how all of your problems can be solved by exorcising the right spirits, but the show is really just standard ghostbusting. Someone should do a shintoesque ghostbusting show, though.

Hi, thanks for all the responses.
First, let me chime in on what Shinto is (which is very interesting). It is a combination of ancestor and nature spirit worship. Those spirits are Kami. The best sense of what a Kami is (which I read from a Shinto priest) was look at the spirits that Native Americans worship. He called those "North American Kami" execpt with a history and spritual relationship with different group of people. Humans can become/be Kami or manifestation of Kami. In X for example, Yuzuhriha, Kusanagi, and Arashi seem to be human manifestations of Kami. I've read that Sakura, of Cardcaptor Sakura is a manifestation of Amataresu and now I want to see that series. Now, I guess I should clarify what I mean by dumbed down.|Inu Yasha is not dumbed down. I shouldn't of mentioned it. I think a lot of Holllywood movies especially one week wonders are dumbed down. Think Jurasic Park 2, a lot of Hentai, etc. I really like good writing, like most people. As for the recomendations, I've seen and liked Arjuna, haven't seen Takemgami, or Spirit Warrior, I'll check them out. All the Best, Nani? |
