Hey, just thought of this after watching naruto. What two or more anime characters do think are the biggest of rivals. Well, for me its Naruto and Sasuke. They would always get into arguments and be rivals to an extent. But after getting into a death match fight i thought that they were the biggest rivals in anime. Now we just have to wait to see what happens in shippuden. It kinda annoyed me though, sasuke always showing up naruto. I know it really made naruto mad . I could name a few more but i'll leave that up to you.

I think I'll list my top 3
3. Guy Shishio and Pizza/Soldat J - these two begin as steadfast enemies and fight several times (all being particularly good ones) but in the end they become allies for the same cause and work together to beat their mutual enemies
2. Lelouche Lamperouge and Suzaku Kururugi - Code Geass has been the story of these two's opposing believes and their relationship defines the story and has proven to deep and very complex
1. Amuro Ray and Char Aznable - these two helped to define an entire genre by fighting against each other. Their individual goals have them fighting against each other or with each other time and again.

Hikaru Shindo and Akira Touya from Hikaru No Go cause it is amusing ( ) when first Akira is after the Sai in Hikaru but then that ends and Hikaru is after Akira... Then Hikaru get's closer and closer to Akira, then he starts to worry! I love the drama! [/b]

Please keep in mind this section of the Rules:
Quote: | 3) Discussions should carry some measure of intelligence to them. Consider if what you are writing is relevant or important to others. If it does not contribute to the discussion, do not post it. Please post detailed answers to questions; lists and one-liners do not contribute. |
If I see list posts, the thread gets locked, so make sure to provide some reasoning why you think a given rivalry is the best. (Sidenote: If you're going to report something, report an individual list post, not the thread in general. I'm allowing it to stay open for now.)
EDIT: And if you find that your post disappeared, it was probably a list.

Ryuhou and Kazuma from Scryed come to mind when I think of best rivals, multiple fights between the two and while they are clearly different in a lot of ways they are also very similar. The episode 26 fight between them was just pure fanservice and damn was it good.

Goku and Vegeta from DBZ. I like their rivarly that occurs towards the end of the Vegeta saga and becomes full blown during the Freiza saga. But I quite like how even after Vegeta admits he could never be better than Goku in the Cell saga, he still continues to train in hopes of being stronger than Goku. Then again, I often feel that this is a one-sided rivarly as Goku never seems to care who's stronger between them.
Yusaku and Mitaka from Maison Ikkoku. For nearly the entire series, these two are always at eachother's throats trying to be better than the other just to get Kyoko to possibly notice them. It makes for a ton of hilarious circumstances to boot. But then, I also appreciate how they both become more mature during the series and stop doing stupid stunts (like trying to get Kyoko to teach them how to ice skate early on while Yusaku and Mitaka try to one-up eachother). During the series, its nice to see them become more aware of Kyoko's feelings and less concerned with one-upping eachother. Its a hilarious rivarly while it lasts though.
I know its a game, but it has a manga now, so Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth from the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney games. It starts off pretty obvious, Phoenix is a defense lawyer and Edgeworth is a state prosecutor. But it evolves and Phoenix eventually ends up defending Edgeworth in court in the first game. While he's mostly absent during the second game, by the end of it, you can see how much Edgeworth has changed from his rivarly with Phoenix, and Phoenix learns some important lessons from Edgeworth as well. Its cute how they were elementary school buds (along with Larry) and that they became friends due to a fakie classroom trial thing as well. Unlike Goku and Vegeta and Yusaku and Mitaka, Phoenix and Edgeworth were actually friends too, and the end of the second game cements that.

Kaname and Tessa from Full Metal Panic. Two incredibly intelligent girls sharing the Whispered powers who are both gorgeous and just happen to be in love with the same guy...it sounds so cliche on paper but their rivalry works really well because while they are rivals both in love and on the battlefield (not in the sense that they are against each other but more that they both feel the need to prove themselves so they get Sousuke's attention), they also know when to put the rivalry away and come together to make important decisions. It's a mature rivalry but at the same time it just has the most delicious catty moments since you are dealing with 2 16 year old girls...

I agree with you there! I was going to mention them if nobody else had.
I like how great the series was in the development of their characters, how it started with them just having a deep rooted hatred for each other, which gradually grew to mutual respect as hated rivals, and then continued on to become a begrudging friendship as allies, but never dropping the rivalry.

Sure, rivalries happen even in anime.
I could only think (as should be a common knowledge) that it is mostly found in a school base story.
Yes, Fullmetal Panic! has its moments and even Rosario+Vampire girls tries to compete who gets Tsukune.
Although, when it comes to rivalries (in my opinion) the best in-all-out anime rivalry has to be Special A (S.A.)
Since day one, when they first saw each other, Hikari and Kei will be rivals till high school. Although, Hikari always tries to be better than Kei in anything he does. So, when it came to high school, Kei is always at the top and Hikari will be the second rate; no different when she got beat in wrestling. The beginning of the first episode is a sure bet that those two will become rivals because their closeness to each other in trying to find weak spot is a sure love.

....that dosnt count. Thats a typical "a whole bunch of hot chicks all fall for the same guy" harem show.

Princess_alchemest I wouldn't exactly call some of those rivals
a rivalry is (usually) when you try to beat someone for the sake of being better than them either directly (by fighting them) or indirectly (working for the same goal but trying to achieve it first, etc.)

Ah. indeed you're correct. I apologize.
So, I retract myself. Another example that I would also put my sights on (also replacing the harem), is School Rumble, it is too a school base story and that Karasuma is Harima's romantic rival.

I think for me it's Lelouch and Suzaku from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.
Sure, they're best friends face to face, but Suzaku has NO IDEA that Lelouch is Zero. And Lelouch hasn't a clue that Suzaku is the pilot of the white Nightmare. It's like they're RIGHT THERE in front of eachother, but still far away. They're like...on opposite sides. But on the same side at the same time. (Of course, I'm only going by what I know so far...I've only seen the first 6 episodes.)

The two characters that come to mind immediately for me are Isamu and Guld from Macross Plus. While the details of exactly why they dislike each other so much are murky in the beginning, it creates a great rivalry between the two imo. The fact that they are both tests pilots for rival companies only adds fuel to the fire, and results in some very spectacular air battles. Even when they're not in the air, they are still rivals over their respective relationships with Myung.
