Don't really see the point. It's made as much money as it could. But I guess since Disney's no longer investing in 2-d, Ghibli will fill the gaps.

Perhaps they are going to try to bring in a demographic (niche that it may be) that wasn't brought in before. Frankly, there is a greater awareness now for the american public of Miyazaki films because of Spirited Away. Since it's already had a theatrical run with the dub and is now out on DVD, (even with that subbed track) they may be trying to make a run by presenting the film in a more unique way than before. Princess Mononoke was probably not the best film to try to open the door to Miyazaki's world to the American public. Your audience has to be able to identify with the characters more, and for the public in general, that wasn't it. Once you are familiar with the artist, when you relook over their work, it can completely change your perspective.

My best guess is that it will be re-released on maybe a dozen screens per weekend at most, for the diehard purists in the top 10 markets whom have always wanted to see it subitled on the big screen. It's a very niche-appeal film as it is, and, even with the Oscar, Hayao Miyazaki still isn't exactly a household name among non-fans. (Spirited Away sold very well for a non kiddy TV merchandising franchise anime, but, still, from the one solid figure I managed to get from ICv2, it had only sold around 400 000 units by mid-June, so, while it likely sold maybe one or two hundred thousand units since then, it hasn't come close to touching the magic million.)
The only back-catalogue Miyazaki films I'd pay to see subtitled on the big screen would be Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro, and, perhaps, Porco Rosso, which I haven't seen in nearly a decade, plus Yoshifumi Kondo's Whisper of the Heart, but that's just my tastes. I just have too little money these days to go out to the movies much, so, for the most part, as nice as it would be to see an actual subtitled theatrical print of some of the other Ghibli films, there are just too many other films out there I haven't seen for it to be a priority. |

It might do some business, but not enough to jusify a re-release. But maybe Disney's just using it to hype Howl. In which case, I'm not exactly sure that the majority of people who made Spirited Away a bigger success than Mononoke are necessarily going to be as interested in Mononoke, because they're two different films.

In Australia, canberra to be more precise, we get a subbed print-screening of Mononoke every 6 moths-every year. And it's not a one off screening either. Iv'e already seen it thre eor four times.

True. I'm an anime fan and I thought Mononoke was an awful movie (by the end, I was rooting for Lady Eboshi  ). And if I feel that way, hows the average non-otaku going to feel about it...

So, this is coming to theatres like Spirited Away, but PM will be subtitled, correct?
I will see it. I loved the movie more than SA. The thing is people complaining in the theatre about how the subtitles are too fast.
