Why hasn't Golgo 13 been properly translated in America?
There were releases in 1986, 89, 90 and 91, but all of those releases were limited. Why hasn't even a good chunk of it been translated for readers in America? Its been continuously published since 1969. So why arent there more translations? Theres so much material it's stupid not to get in on that! I have a couple of japanese volumes of golgo 13, but i haven't been able to find any english versions. Whats up with this? |

Probably because hardly anybody bought it in 1986, '89, '90 or '91. I'd quite like to see it released in English myself but, with the possible exception of some of Kazuo Koike's stuff, macho seinen manga doesn't really seem to sell very well in the English language market. What might work better with something like Golgo is a collection of 5 or 6 anthology editions bringing together the best stories from the past 40 years because there's no way any US publisher is going to release all 130+ volumes. |

Manga doesn't do as well as anime over here, but I'm sure there are people who would love to see some of the titles that aren't licensed in English. Unfortunately there is a thing called timing as well, and for the Golgo 13 manga, it just doesn't work in this instant. Although I think that the manga is pretty rad myself.

well it seems the manga market doesnt have too much spy manga, which is a genre that isnt just a japanese thing.
Seeing as how its mainly self contained stories, rather than a large overall story arc, it would be awesome if a company released golgo 13 in a few volumes collecting the best. 130 volumes IS a daunting task, but I cant even find the old volumes on Ebay and alot of comic stores that I have been to haven't even heard of it. But its still one of my favorites and Its upsetting that its not properly translated. I heard viz was supposed to release some volumes as a part of its signature series, but i dont even know if that actually went through. |

Well, Viz did release 13 volumes of it. As far as I know, they basically split up two of the giant best-of anthologies into 13 volumes. So some Golgo 13 is out there.

its like "13 Volumes of Golgo 13's greatest hits!" I have never once seen these in a store, but I am going to begin my search high and low for them now that I know they exist. |

For the Golgo 13 manga you need to know the current events when the story arc was written at the time to fully understand the story. In the Viz volume I don't believe many people are going to remember the Clinton cabinet members (Secretary of Treasury Madeleine K. Albright, etc).
Spy Manga is not popular in the US. When people starting to rent out manga from the library nobody (except me) rented out the Golgo 13 volumes. |
