I was looking through the new TRSI sale on Tokypop manga. This title caught my eye but I was wondering if it's good or not. The description sounds good but it may be misleading. I like to buy things in bulk so I would buy it all at once or three or four volumes (ya its a bad habit). So I was wondering what you all think of the series .
Description from TRSI wrote: |
Ivan Isaacs was once a priest. Devoted to his faith he would have given up anything for it - then the establishment he believed in turned on him, sending him headlong into Hell.
Now, he's back. With the priesthood now corrupt with demons, the undead, and black prayers, he has returned with the help of the demon Belial, a voice in the darkness who offered Ivan a chance at vengeance, in exchange for his soul.
With his six-shooter and a bouie knife at his side and the white collar of his former life adorning his neck he is a lost pale rider in a barren wild west where past and future collide. |

I've read the first volume and it was actually pretty good. It has an interesting vibe to it, thanks to the mysterious Ivan. I'll probably buy the second volume as well.

The heavy art turned me off a little bit, and the story (at least in the first volume that I read) was like a not-so-good rip on Hellsing. But it's quite popular for a manhwa, so give it a shot, your opinion might differ from mine.

Priest is epic story that span several generations. Like Berserk, it start out with very little story and focuses more on action, style and violence (which really just to setup), it gets deeper by volume 3. It raises a lot of questions about religion, god and faith.
So is it worth picking up? Yes if you dark art style, action, violence, character development, bad ass characters. It's basically about a tragic hero/priest who lost his loves which lead him to rejected god and now fights demons and angels to maintain his sanity. But it doesn't focus on Isaac exclusively, as several chapters are used to developed other characters (like a bad ass Native American) that will major impact to the story.
Overall it's a lot better than something like Hellsing, which are pure action and no story. I also really like the art style as well.

Cool, thanks for you answers. I was going to pass on it but with the answers you gave, I'm going to grab the first two volumes and see how much I like.
Thanks again

Priest is a good series, but the series has been on hiatus since volume sixteen came out like two years ago. I recommend the series, but I would also wait to hear for news about volume 17 before collecting unless you REALLY like it.

The series looks pretty gory.. Is it good? I like some manhwa, my favorites are Banya, and Shaman Warrior. The artwork in those are incredible, i'd say they're "have-to-reads".

Just a quick note:
I have to second the frustration on Priest 17 hiatus. I don't know what's going on but it seems like it will never come out. So just keep in mind this may be an incomplete series. (Oh, I hope not, but I have to brace myself for the worst. )
Next, if you can view a preview of the work I would suggest checking it out. I think Tokyopop offers a free view of the first chapter on their website. I'm not sure but that's always a good place to start. The art is rather rough when compared to other works. However, it is likable. And as another has said it really grows on you. It is a good work that is worth checking out.
