and another question is do they make there TV shows to that ratio? if so, when companies inport them how to they make them fit US TVs? picture from GTO (sorry about the geocities) |

I think Japanese TVs are 4:3, the same as most TVs in the US. At least most of the import DVDs I've seen are labled 4:3. I would also assume they have the 16:9 widescreen HDTVs there too, considering some of the widescreen anime coming out lately (Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C., .hack//SIGN, Heat Guy J, Chobits, etc.).

Has anyone noticed the ratio on Heat Guy J on MTV is wrong. They stretched it too much vertically and now it looks like they are taller and skinny.

That has to do with how anamorphic DVDs work. If you were to set you DVD player to 16:9 and have it hooked up to a 4:3 TV, the image would appear vertically stretched for an anamorphic DVD. If you set your DVD player to 4:3 and hook it up to a 4:3 TV, the DVD player omits every 4th line or so in the vertical picture and replaces it with a blank line that appears at the top and bottom of the screen. MTV is playing it like having a DVD player set to 16:9 on a 4:3 TV. If you have a widescreen TV, you can watch it without it being all scrunched up. |

Is that Shining Force 3 being played on the television? Anywaste that television is a widescreen (16:9) television, which is slowly becoming the next standard. But the television aspect ratios are the same all over the world, either 4:3 or 16:9.
Your brother is a filthy, filthy liar whose pants are, as we speak, prolly on fire, or they should be at least. He should be punished in a cruel and unusual way for his lying crimes, which I trust you will take care of as a good and upstanding citizen. Anywaste, as with everywhere else some shows in Japan are being made with a 16:9 aspect ratio since it is the future and more and more households are being equipped with widescreen television sets. As for what they do with them when they are to be shown on 4:3 sets? Well there are a couple of options. For one they can just keep the original aspect ratio and add black bars on top and bottom so it fits on a 4:3 television screen. Or they could be really ignorant and mean by cutting the left and right side of the picture so it fits on a 4:3 television without the black bars. |

Noir is in anamorphic widescreen right? For some reason, my TV always has these lines flashing when things move around on that show.
Is there any way to reduce that? Those lines are really distracting to me and aren't helping in keeping my interest in the series. |

The one, only and the failed Sega Saturn. In Japan it was released in 3 volumes, all of which you had to complete in order to get the full scope of its epic story. Unfortunately SEGA pulled an unforgivable stunt and decided only to release the first volume in the US and Europe. Typical of them to not fully release the one game that would have justified the purchase of their ill-fated system. Needless to say that I treasure my copy of Shining Force III above all else in my game collection. Who knows, gods willing we will one day see a port for the PSP or even a true sequel if those lazy bastards at Camelot would pull their heads out SEGA's ass and get to work. |

IF you mean what I think you mean, buy a good DVD player and dump your APEX/Cyberhome/whatnot. It's a crappy MPEG-2 decoder |

I have a PS2, a DVD-ROM in my PC, and some DVD player in the living room. The lines aren't as noticeable on the living room TV (64" projector), but still bug me a little. I watched some of it at one of my friend's house, also on a PS2, but the lines hardly showed up. |
