So I recently went to an anime con, and there was a booth selling old manga in comic form. I got Spirit of Wonder, and at the end of Issue 1 there was a page talking about a manga called Version. The article on that page was discussing the plot of Version, and how disappointing it was that they had to cancel it.
It sounded interesting, and I found it in comic form the next day. I enjoyed it very much and I was hooked after just two chapters. Naturally, I wanted to know about it. So I came here, and it didn't have a page (however, the artist, Hisashi Sakaguchi, did). Neither did Wikipedia. Google was no help. I looked at many websites, and the only place I could buy it was used on eBay. I even stooped down to trying to find it on scantalation sites as a last resort, and it wasn't there! It's feels as if this manga didn't even exist! There seems to be no record of even a graphic novel release, only those comics. So those of you that know Version, what happened to it, why was it canceled, and why is it so obscure and unknown, even though it really wasn't that bad at all? Thanks! EDIT: The publisher was Dark Horse Comics. |

It ran to three volumes in Japan but it was never collected into a graphic novel release in English and Dark Horse dropped it after 15 issues (which I guesstimate to be about two thirds of the way through the series).
You might find some more information about the Dark Horse releases here. |

Did Version actually end after those 3 volumes? Hisashi Sakaguchi passed away in 1995...I'm not sure if that was during Version's Japanese run or not, but it wasn't too long after Dark Horse stopped their English language publication.
This is a hard one to find, too...I think I've only ever found 2 issues in my years of hunting for it. EDIT -- Also, oddly, Version doesn't seem to have an entry in the Encyclopedia... |

It concluded its serialisation in Japan in 1992 so, unless it was suspended for some reason, it looks like it was completed before his death.
I've just submitted it. |

Nice to see others mention this one. I'm pretty much a fanatic about this series. Surely it'll be republished one day. Sakaguchi is that good. Not sure if mentioning retailers is allowed here. Anyway, the series can be found on the Mile High comics and mycomicshop.com web sites. Not to mention Ebay. And if you don't mind spending the gas money, by scouring comic book shops you should be able to find it in the 50 cent bargain bins. Sooner or later, at least. It's funny how certain manga published only in the 32 page comic book format in the eighties and nineties are almost completely forgotten. |

I know! There's so much good stuff lost to the sands of time. Anyone else remember Chronowar? Venus Wars? Rebel Sword? Even books Viz released that have new anime incarnations, like Area 88 and Guyver, are still virtually impossible to find. |
