I have been seeing a lot of lupin the third trailers. Now if you read my gundam wing thread i like classic series. Again not many years of being into anime, about 3 years(but i love it of course.) So anyway I was wandering what you thought of it?

It looks pretty good overall but still a little flimsy. Now its by Hayao Miyazaki the god of anime so I am really giving it a try. But the art seems really wierd for some characters. Now for the last part is it remastered. I saw some on crunchyroll(just skimmed through the first episode of the tv series) and the animation quality didn't seem good.

So i would love to hear what you have to say. Very Happy

I wouldn't call Miyazaki the god of anime, considering he didn't invent it or anything, he's just a big part of it. But anyway, after all these years of watching anime I haven't watched a single episode of movie in the Lupin the III series. I must be missing out.

One movie was done by Miyazaki. Everything else, from the movies to the TV series have been done by various other people over the years. I love this series. It is always funny to watch as the Lupin and crew attempt a heist of sorts, and the outcome of them, whether they be good or bad. Toss in Zenigata who is always after Lupin but can never catch the masterthief. A number of people I have seen talk about the series on here say how the animation isn't great, but I have to wonder if they realize it's from the late seventies. But that doesn't matter, because I think that era is well represented for what views there were on certain cultures back then, as well as the Jazz culture, which I don't get that much of a chance to get into. Personally I enjoy Lupin, and I don't think that will let up either.

I like Lupin. A lot. It really plays to my sense of humor, especially in the TV series. I think my favorite lines ever in the history of entertainment were both uttered by Goemon. ::Goemon charges at a pair of bad guys, flashes his sword, and their clothes and guns fall to pieces as they collapse to the floor:: "They shall both be fine... ish." I never get tired of it, I'm smirking like an idiot as I type this.

The English dub generally does a good job of catering to North Americans, which I think is a really big reason that AS played it way back when.

The relationship between Lupin and Zenigata is fun too. In the series it's normally the run of the mill "I'll get you if it's the last thing I do!. CRAP!CRAP!CRAP!", but in the movies it usually comes out that Zenigata has a great deal of respect for him. As a matter of fact, the two often team up to fight the greater evil, which usually leads to a big juicy arrest for Zenigata, which might be why INTERPOL has let him chase Lupin for the last 30 odd years Wink

(S)he is talking about Castle of Cagliostro, of course, but I think Miyazaki came back and did a 2-4 episode block at some point, one of which was an homage to those old Superman cartoons with they flying, vacuum wielding, bank robbing robots.

Basically, watch Lupin.

EDIT: I can spell 'Cagliostro'...

That is the movie I was referring to. I still haven't watched it yet, but I was able to watch Lupin 0, which basically showed how the whole crew got together. I've also seen the one where he was cloned by Mamo, which had plenty of fanservice from Mine Fujiko to boot Very Happy Lupin is still pretty popular in Japan, even though there is no more show, it still gets played repeatedly on television.

Yeah, I've seen all of the second TV series that was dubbed, and almost all of the movies/specials. I also bought a bootleg version of Episode 0 before I knew that people sold bootlegs Embarassed , it's tied with Cagliostro as my favorite movie.

Right, they don't do the series anymore, but they still make new specials every year...ish.

And I did a bit of looking on the ANNcyclopedia, and found that Miyazaki directed 13 episodes in the first season of Lupin III in addition to Castle of Cagliostro.

Even with that the VAs have done a wonderful job of filling in the roles of their beloved characters over the years. And they don't seem to get tired of it either, since they were made famous by the show. I have also had the excellent opportunity to get all of the DVDs available for the show, though I could stand to watch them a bit more.

That's another good point, and I think you're talking about the Japanese voices (who were the same every single time except for Fuma Conspiracy, and Lupin's VA recently died, so going forward it will obviously be different), but I like the English VAs as well. The only 'problem' with that is whenever I hear them in another role, I think of Lupin. I had that problem when I watched Robotech, Lupin's voice comes out of Rick Hunter's mouth. It got to the point where I actually would call him Lupin. (Yes, I talk to my TV when I watch anime...) I caught one episode of GITS: SAC on AS and immediately pegged one of the officers as Jigen. Even though Eric Vale only played Lupin a few times, I still found myself thinking about him when I watched Desert Punk.

You've been lurking for over a year and break your silence with that compelling arguement?

Do not offend the above Lupin lover... Wink

(Biggest mistake I ever made on this forum was wandering into a Eureka Seven discussion and elaborating on all of its shortcomings. I got snapped at from twenty different directions and retreated whimpering, "I really did like the show...!) Laughing

But anyway, Lupin is well worth a viewing. The English dubs (plural) are all good and enjoyable, and of course the Japanese is fun. It didn't hold much rewatch value for me, but it's somewhat akin to watching Indiana Jones: How can you justifiably not love watching Indiana Jones? You can't, that's what.

I'm not a particular fan of dubs, but these days there have been a couple of dubs that I have enjoyed, particularly with Crispin Freeman in it. So, I might check out the dub, after I finish watching the Japanese version of it.

I'm not a big fan of Lupin but I do feel like I owe something to the franchise for some odd reason. That's why I'm buying the movie/special sets from Funimation.

The humor gets me occasionally but I don't know that I'd call the franchise very funny. It's just a fun quirky show to watch after a long day or night. Definitely something everyone should see at some point though, I'm glad I've seen a number of episodes.

I haven't seen any of the movies that Funimation licensed, but Geneon's dub of the second TV series (the "red jacket" episodes) was drop-dead hilarious. (Very sadly, with things being what they are, we'll probably never get any more of that series dubbed with that cast, as Geneon released its last volume about a year before it ceased distribution...and that was only about halfway through the series, too.) I caught the first twenty-six episodes on Adult Swim's run, loved every second of it, and snapped up all of the available DVDs. You just can't beat the classics.

Those sets are a steal, and they are probably even cheaper at Rightstuf right now.
