OMG! First we finally get Graces f, and now they're trademarking Xillia! I hope to whatever higher power is out there that they go through with localizing this one as well! I'll totally pick it up Day One, no questions asked!
I've been extremely impressed with Graces f so far, so if they can bring the same level of quality to Xillia, it will be awesome. |

Or they just trademark it to prevent the name from being stolen.. which a lot of companies do. But it'd be nice if the US got the game.

I hope they do get it, part of the main reason I bought a PS3 was to play Tales of Vesperia but we never got it. This would totally make up for it.
I still can't figure out they brought it on the XBox 360 and not the PS3. |

IIRC, it has something to do with Microsoft. Like the only reason it got localized in the first place was because of Microsoft, but the contract stated it could only be released in the west exclusively for the 360, so Namco can't localize the PS3 version.

Yep, exclusivity deals. The Xbox 360 wasn't doing so well in Japan (and still isn't, I guess), so Microsoft wanted a few RPGs on it. In theory it was a good deal for both companies, but sales weren't as good as they had hoped. Releasing a director's cut on the PS3 was Namco Bandai's way of making some extra cash, after the exclusivity deal expired, of course.
As for why they localised only the Xbox 360 version, again, Microsoft had a hand in that, although I kind of doubt it was anything more than funding (part) of the project. Then the PS3 edition was released in Japan with a boatload of new content. Localising that too would have been tricky. In the best case scenario, Namco Bandai would have had to rehire the original VAs to record all the new dialogue. It wouldn't have been cheap. Worse case scenario: rights to the English localisation lie with Microsoft. In any case, it's doubtful bringing over the PS3 version would have been worth it for Namco Bandai. The Xbox 360 sold better than the PS3 in North America and Europe at the time Tales of Vesperia was released. |

That is true Tamaria, but the Xbox is not known for being a console with a lot of RPG support. Anyone that is a true traditional RPG fan likely has a PS3 (and PS2 I guess). There is also a very large selection of RPG games available on the PSP as well. (Which are thereby available to anyone owning a Vita as well. Assuming the title is available on PSN and they have a PS3 to copy the non-Vita-prepared titles over)

Hey, the Xbox 360 has some noteworthy exclusives, including Tales of Vesperia in the West. If you claim to be a 'true RPGfan' you're better off owning both

I don't really count "exclusives" as true support of the console. Microsoft likes to throw money at certain games when they think it's in their best interests. The true test is seeing what console the RPG makers choose on their own when not being handed a large briefcase of money. The case of Vesperia, as others have noted, was MS trying to boost 360 sales in Japan and amongst the RPG demographic. (As the only strong points of the 360 tend to be FPS and Sports games) |

Why is that wrong? It's business. Money is a valid reason to pick one system over another.

Can't bring up the newspost right now, but someone from either microsoft or bandai later denied that was the case. Edit: Ah, here it is I honestly thought that rumor sounded kind of silly. Considering Tales games (sadly) aren't really blockbuster sellers in the US, I don't really see why they'd even bother with such a deal. |

I didn't say it was wrong. I just said that if you had to choose between the PS3 or 360 for RPGs, that the PS3 has a better selection. They have far more RPGs that are either only available on PS3, or that are released on both systems. Then you could consider the number of older RPG titles available on PSN that you can play on the PS3. Or as I said before, the extensive RPG collection available for PSP that you can get through PSN as well. PS: Good find there Shen. That really does beg the question then -- why wouldn't they localize the PS3 version with so many people clamoring for it? Vesperia was a great game with probably the best male lead out of the franchise so far. The game is already on PS3 in Japan. They already have the localized content from the English 360 release. Surely it wouldn't be that hard to convert it. Worst-case scenario we just get the DLC unvoiced? |

Yes, the fact we didn't get PS3 Vesperia is odd since they probably have about %75 of the audio done already.
Bamco actually did more or less the same thing when they brought over the non-crappy PS3 port for Eternal Sonata...of course, it should be considered that ES is a heck of a lot smaller then any Tales games. And as for the extra content being released as DLC for the 360 version...that's pretty much impossible as the extra stuff for the PS3 version is probably way to enormous and interwoven in to the main game to just add in with a patch. |

Well, anythings possible with a patch. Thats the whole point of a patch file, actually
I think it comes down to the not-so-joking quip my friends and I make when Japan does something that doesn't make sense: Japan hates money. There are many cases where they are just seemingly sitting on something for no reason that could make them a lot of money. It prints money, but they won't do it. Japan hates money |

Wow, um...really don't think I would go that far. You may want to edit that, just saying.
And as for a patch, that would first require interest on the japanese side to create such a patch, for a version of the game that came out on a system which is not very popular over there. And considering that the PS3 version actually outsold the 360 version by a considerable amount, there really isn't a reason to bother. That would leave them to create a patch JUST for the US audience, for a game that is VERY niche. As for, "Anything is possible with a patch"...no, definately not in this case. The PS3 version not only includes Flynn being a playable character, but Patty also who who has her own sub-plot in the main game and is a main part of the story after she joins. Add in new scenes, scenes that replace old scenes, new arts, new enemies, new dungeons, new side quests... It would just be TOO enormous and complicated, even if it were possible. |

But a patch file is just adding/replacing data with other data. This is why you can say, have corruption in a video file, yet release a patch that only corrects the affected area instead of re-downloading the entire file.
Anyways thats neither here nor there anymore for this thread, so lets just drop it |
