I am just wondering, it got high rating at animenfo.com, but so did Fullmetal Panic Fumoffu (which was fun for about 3 episodes and after that, if you seen one episode, you seen them all). I love shows where characters resemble real people, being big fan of film medium. I can get Great Teacher Onizaka, but if it’s anything like Onegai Twins/Teachers, Love Hinas and so on, why bother.
So, is it like that or is it different ? (mixes comedy and drama in a smart way).
P.S. This site has a review of first DVD and series, but I want to hear your opinions.

I own the entire series. I have to say that I enjoyed it. It isn't necessarily a "smart" comedy but it does take on some controversial issues. You may or may not care for the solutions espoused. Generally the manga is a higher quality work, especially towards the end.
Disect at your leisure.

GTO is what you they call "Slice of Life." It gives a, somewhat, real life perspective on things the may happen in real life.
I have this entire series as well and it's my 2nd favorite. The setting is in a Japanese high school, and being a student myself, found it very enjoyable.
The comedy can tend to be a little questionable with a lot of jokes about human anatomy and whatnot, but it gives off a very enjoyable aura to the entire series.
However, it depends on which version you watch. The sub version, I think is better. It has a lot of goofy and (sometimes) subtle comedy. But in the dub, they sometimes mistranslate or omit certain jokes and make up for it by replacing them with what I labled "American comedy." Material that's a little too gross and raunchy when compared to some of the original jokes.
I don't care which version you watch, but please at least watch each of them once so you'll understand the comparisons. In other words, GET IT. You'll enjoy it.

I watched this entire series on Showtime with them broadcasting dubbed and I enjoyed it. I'm not going out to buy it though. I never found myself laughing much at the comedy, but the drama side was good for a while. It just kept repeating itself with Onizuka fixing all of his student's problems, and the filler episodes near the end bogged it down. The antics of Onizuka kept the series from being stale. The subbed version may have been better, but I'm not going to out of my way to find out.

You see? There's a testament to the dub already. Go with the sub version. But you don't have to take my word for it. And one more important thing to note for the voice acting, the dub has a lot of voice recycling. If you look at the Encyclopedia, you'll see that there's multiple characters for every one voice actor. Not to mention, they sound a lot funnier in Japanese. Again, you don't have to take my word for it, but if you're a sub fan, I guarantee you'll enjoy, at least, some of it.

Great show, subbed.
But after watching GTO live action, you wonder what went wrong...Nevertheless, GTO the anime is really classy and great.

In a small defense of the anime, it was attempting to follow the original manga. I wonder how many people felt robbed at first if they started with the manga, then went to the live action...
Of course, the live action (to me and several others) is the superior product.
In any case, I'd say it is well worth your time to pick it up.

Put it this way... If I had teachers like him, school would've been a helluva lot more enjoyable, and I'd probably fail once or twice intentionally just to have a teacher as good as him.
The only two I ever had like him were my gr.10 math teacher (I could understand any math problem when he explained it), and my socioligy (sp?) teacher.
As was already said.. "It isn't necessarily a "smart" comedy but it does take on some controversial issues." I enjoyed the dubbed and subbed.

I know how it is to be behind in the manga... I have through volume 12, and my mom (intentionally conspired with a friend of mine) got me vol 16 for my birthday .
I'd call it evil, but my mom never gets me anime related gifts, but just a couple of days ago I get that, and the first two DVD's of Someday's Dreamers from her.
So I can't help but be really stoked.

Saw the entire series last week it was a fun kick ass series. Strange the animation/comedy they used reminded me of Beavis and Butthead especially the scenes with principal which were quite funny.
Oh and yeah is their a big difference between the anime and manga ending. The anime ending seem a bit rushed. How many volumes is their of Onizuka.

If I read it correctly, I think the manga will be 25 volumes.
