As some of you may know, I'm doing a project for my technical writing class that's due in April. In the paper, I was going to have a section talking about how anime differs from American cartoons and live action movies.

But I need a really good movie to use as an example. I'm sure a Miyazaki film would work, but are there any others? I'm trying to look for something with "Academy Award" calibur content. It doesn't have to be new either, but something I can buy on DVD and find pictures of to use as my accompanying illustrations. Thanks.

EDIT: Here are links to the other threads:

Um, not Miyazaki, but close: Grave of the Fireflies. You can't possibly go wrong.

Cowboy Bebop movie, Knockin' On Heaven's Door. It had good animation, a good story, and a good part of an excellent series.

Hmm I think that Ninja Scroll would fall into this category, beautiful animation with an award winning story.

Well...does it really have to be a movie? If I could suggest a short series, Haibane Renmei would hit the mark very well. Unconventional, and extremely well done.

As for movies, beyond Miyazaki, X might be good for pure artistic value, and Ghost in the Shell might work for both the visuals and the interpretation of the original story. Jin-Roh would be another great choice. Then there's always AKIRA you could fall back on.

The aforementioned Grave of the Fireflies & Perfect Blue are probably better options, though.

I also agree with Haibane Renmei.

As for movies, I'd choose Princess Mononoke. It's my favorite of Miyazaki's movies.

No. I suppose a series could work too, but I can't really think of any. Tell me a little more about this Haibane Renmei. What did it give you that set it so much apart from other anime?

I would have to strongly second this. Perfect Blue is a very good film, but more importantly, it was ground breaking in its mature and psychological storyline.

OK, then. I think a friend of mine has Grave of the Fireflies, so I can borrow that from him. And since there's a lot of praise over Perfect Blue, I guess I'll go and check that out too. Thanks everyone. If you have anymore movies or series that can go with these titles, feel free to keep adding them.

anime#1871

That provides a good enough synopsis. As best as I can describe it, Haibane Renmei is just an extremely beautiful series. It's very touching, amazingly well-written, and among both anime and Western entertainment alike it's quite atypical. I think Zac puts it better in his review than I am right now, actually, so I'll just post the link to that: roc.animenewsnetwork.com/reviews/display.php?id=530

Im surprised nobody has mentioned Eavngelion. It'd definately be something hard to write about, though it is something that with the way it is, it wouldn't work in other forms.

I haven't seen them yet, but I have heard a lot of good stuff for Millenium Actress (made by the guy who did Perfect Blue btw) and Lain.

I thought Grave of the Fireflies was an incredible movie. I got the dvd that's a remaster with really clean animation and audio, and the special stuff is really good because there are a bunch of segments on the production and other themes of the movie. That stuff would probably help with the paper. Watch that version if you can.

Please tell me you're being sarcastic. Ninja Scroll is a great movie with terrific action but you can hardly call it's story "award winning" Wink.

Wasn't Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust nominated for something...?

I dunno...I think the Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal OAVs were really, really well done.

I thought Voices of a Distant Star was really beautiful, too.
