Hey i just saw the first episode. it was really good! The action was nice and the chatacters were cool. I thought it was funny how that girl with the black hair could barely hold her sword. So what do you think of the series. I say it looks promising. The characters are very unique. i read about Mai otome and Mai otome O-stif-ir or whatever that is.
Also, do they have any box sets, like on bestbuy.com or any site. I really look foward to watching the series. |

Good to see a new Hime fan. Hope that you will enjoy more of the series in the near future!
Right now, there isn't a box set for My-Hime, but all seven volumes are available on DVD and are fairly easy to find. Right Stuf is doing a 20% off sale right now and Robert's Anime Corner Store has volume 7 with the improved art box on sale. You can get the whole series right now without a lot of trouble. The action in the series gets more intense later on and there are a lot of interesting and fun characters that get introduced after the first episode. Plus, the series is just generally a lot of fun. It's one of my favorite series to watch and just have a great time with. Some people complain about the ending but whether you like it or love it is going to depend on a lot of issues. Since you haven't seen the whole thing yet, I don't want to spoil anything for you, but I'd recommend getting it as it's a darn good series. Mai is a rich and well-written character and Mikoto gets more than a few chances to show off her sword skills. My-Otome isn't complete yet on R1 DVD and it's more of an alternate-universe take on many of the same characters but it's also quite good. It starts out a bit slower than My-Hime though. There probably won't be a box set for Hime for a little while yet, but you should keep an eye on Bandai Entertainment's website and ANN of course to stay informed about one. Considering how cool the second art box that came with volume 7 is, I'd just go ahead and buy the singles if money's not too much of an issue. On a personal note: I'm happy you want to buy it rather than just download it. You're a credit to fandom. Hope this info helps! |

This series was a great surprise for me, and now I'm a huge fan. I even liked the ending... It's not really deep in any way, but the series is a lot of fun.

I almost passed this series off as something that I wouldn't like, but after seeing some damn cool character art in Newtype, I gave it a Netlixing and was quite pleasantly surprised.
Richard J pretty much described it well, though he forgot to talk about the musical score. The score is great, and does wonders in enhancing good scenes (as you'll see/hear in ep 3). I for one didn't mind the ending, but I definitely understand why people disliked it and I won't argue that fact. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series . |

My HIME was an excellent series I think. It had an awesome overall story, a lot of great likable characters, pretty sweet action, was animated quite well, of course Yuki Kajiura scores rock my world so I loved the music too. It got off to a great start, gets bogged down with filler comedy episodes for a while and then about halfway though the real meat of the storyline begins and it's absolutely amazing after that. I'm a huge fan of the ending myself, did not see that comming at all.
I'm not going to comment on My Otome yet myself as I've only seen a little over half of that. |

Guess I need to rewatch this, huh. I can't quite remember the music which is odd. With all the "Great music" I see around for it, I would think it would have struck me too since music is very important to me. Otherwise I found it very decent/average, usually less than most people. I can't really say "why" though and it bugs me to not know the reason I didn't enjoy it more, I usually do and for any anime I rate 6 or lower can tell you exactly why.(Though this did get a 7 I believe, my usual "seemed ok, didn't hate it, but what do I rate this" rating)

I liked this series, too. I tried to get my bud and fellow anime fan ( who shall remain nameless for his own safety ) to watch this, and he would not. I need to tell him not to judge a DVD by its cover ! haha. I liked this series a lot and rewatch it fairly often. I remember chuckling when
--- ending spoiler follows inside of here, you have been warned !! --- spoiler[ Miyu got Jerk of the year ( or some similar reward, in anime insider, for what she did to akane / kazuya, which was indeed a pretty big bummer ! I know some people hate "reset switch endings", but I enjoyed it, I guess I am not one of those people.] |

I did forget to mention the music, didn't I. While it's not the best score of all time, this series has one some very catchy music. Certain scenes really shine I think such as in the aftermath of spoiler[the attack of Fuka academy when a certain, seemingly unemotional character is mourning another's death. Vague in case temptation overcomes the spoiler gaurd.]
That's one of my favorite scenes. The music playing and the singing, while a little more engrishy than I like, is just so haunting and moving. (At least to me.) One of the things I really like with the DVDs is getting all the little vignettes after each episode, some of which flesh out the characters a little more and some which just, well, show off the character's flesh a bit more. |

I chose to watch it just because of the music composed by yuki kajiura. It was good but a little typical with the plot setting. Magical girls with giant familiars battling it out while attending the same private academy is seriously lacking in originality. Still entertaining.
My only real problem with it spoiler[was the massive character death followed by a happy ending where everyone is revived and happily in love.] It is hard to respect a plot where the drama built up over the entire series is thrown out the window in the end. |

That was the one major problem I had with the series, too. Otherwise I loved it enough that I got a wall scroll of the main characters - and I'm very selective about my wall scrolls. It may not be terribly original, and its dub is hampered by some very weak performances (though not all, mind you; I ranked Carol Anne-Day as the top female English performer of 2006 for her rendition of Mai), but it has a winning score and a good mix of comedy, drama, and action. In general, it's an exciting, fun view. My-Otome, by comparison, starts weak but gradually picks up steam. It finally hits its full stride around the halfway point, and was really chugging along through the recently-released volume 5 (eps 17-20). |

You see, me on the other hand...I cheered out loud spontaniously when that happened because spoiler[I'd just got done watching like 4 strait disappointing anime with depressing endings and I hate depressing endings (usually but there are some exceptions), and was absolutely sure this would probabally be the 5th in the vicious cycle but wanted to complete it at least. ] However, I was wrong and it wasn't, far from it in fact, which made extremely happy. |

besides ep 3, my favorite musical part (where I felt it greatly enhanced the scene) was ep 20, spoiler[that particular fight-scene ] where it was just the vocals of the score with no music. It -ed me. |

I personally love the song with that nice Spanish guitar bit called "Tokiro no Mai" as well as the more techno/dance oriented "Mezame" and "Duran Shoukan". They really enhance any schene that they're played in to epic proportions.

I feel as though I'm one of the few people here who actually had a hard time getting into the series. It just felt like a weird mishmash of teenage angst, fan service and magical girls to me. Mai and Takumi never really grew on me and I found the Natsuki plot and character far more interesting. I also found Midori played by Yukari Tamura (Ranpha from GA) quite entertaining along with the ultra cool Shizuru played by Naomi (Cagalli) Shindo. spoiler[One of my favorite scenes is Midori activating Miyu, followed by Shizuru's tragic mental collapse.] I suppose I tend to lean towards the more mature characters (Sakaki, and Yomi are my favorite Azumanga girls) in an ensemble. Reflecting upon it this series has an amazing cast.
I found Kajiura's music novel back when she got her start, but since think her style has really gotten repetitive unlike Kanno (old debate) or my favorite Kenji Kawaii. I think she is at her strongest when she is doing simple melodies (like the little bonus clips at the end of the episodes) over her signature Enya-ish sound. So far I've enjoyed My-Hime over My-Otome as of volume 4 (volume 5 is in my to be watched pile) but I here the series picks up by the end. As much as I didn't care for Mai I will say I liked her far better than Arika, and Nina who seem even less mature than Mai and Natsuki. |
