Strolling through the anime section of my local Base Exchange, I happen upon Abenobashi Magical Shopping District DVD 1. I was just about to commit to buying it for my friend's little brother, when I noticed a 17+ up rating on it. (The rating was actually done by the company, not the store) ANN gave it a rating of "older children." Since I don't want his mom to put a gun to my head, I'd like to know: Did I find a box with a typo, or is the ANN article more forgiving than the company?

17+ is right. It's worse than FLCL by far.
There is a whole episode were Arumi doesn't have panties on. It's really funny but......and Sasshi ends up between Mune-Mune's breasts quite a bit
Yeah, 17+ is pretty approriate, especially if you think his mom will shoot you for buying it for him.

hmm, it's been a while since I last saw Abenobashi, I do remember I loved it though
you should buy it anyway, if not for your friend's brother you can always keep it for yourself

So, was Mr. Divers tripping on some dancing mushrooms when he wrote the rating? I suppose I will have to keep it all to myself then. I will defend our youth by "forcing" myself to watch it. Time to make a return trip, I guess: AMSD for me, Saint Seiya for him.

I think its a bit over kill...
i've seen the aforementioned episode, and i can tell you that they've completely blown it out of proportion.
if there is any nudity, its so brief that you'll never noticed unless you're obsessed enough to try and find it. there is lots of fan-service (but we are talking about GAINAX here!) so that is shouldn't be a problem either.

Well, I might show it to someone younger (like 14-15) but then it depends on the person.
Yeah, true, I made it sound a little worse.

well, i do admit that i would have a hard time showing this to young kids. not so much because of sex jokes as because i don't think they would understand any of it. i mean, its not as complex as FLCL (which again, people say its bad, but theres never any nudity) but it is way out there.
its funny as heck, but i wouldn't want to be asked
"what does this mean?" or "i don't get it"
that really takes away from the fun

Abenobashi is a parody like (more or less) Excel Saga, (much more than) Guu and maybe some other anime. In Excel Saga the targeted audience is different though, and Guu has really great ...plot/stories/conflicts/whatever you call it.
Abenobashi is just fun, but you need to have seen some gundam-like mecha anime, played a japanese RPG game, street fighter, and all of the other things this anime makes fun of, or you'll miss the fun. It is for japanese older kids, who have seen all of this, but I don't know about other countries. It's certainly not for european kids.
And there's the case when you've had enough of parodies and will find this extremely boring. Especially when even the japanese voice cast is half asleep most of the time.
(opinion based on first four eps)

i'm guessing you haven't seen the entire series, otherwise you's know why it's 17+ it seems really innocent at first, but the humor starts getting more crude later in the series.
