my understanding is it's a "buycott" and a "boycott" rolled into one.. since (back then) SOS had buycotts... while other fans would boycott certain companies. Heck, some people STILL boycott certain companies.
either that, or it's a clever way to mask a 4-year old typo.

While your definition makes sense, I couldn't find a dictionary that recognized either "buycott" or "buoycott", and I could find definitions for "ain't", "teer" and "speer" (the last two I didn't know were words), so doesn't that make it wrong.
Maybe the dude who created the word hated buoy's or something.

a 'buycott' is when a group of people go out and buy a specific product to show support for a 3rd party.
Save Our Sailors specifically had one with Kellogg's Pop-Tarts that I recall. They may have had others.
The logic behind it is:
"Sales totals are relatively unchanged from day to day. If we can create a small but noticable difference in the sales, then we can positively show our power as a group, rather than negatively do so."
Of course, ultimately, the SOS one failed.
