I suppose it depends on what you like and what you don't like. First and foremost I'd suggest watching a subbed version of a show you already know and like, to see if you prefer it in Japanese or English.. of course, the quality of that dub could vary pretty widely, depending on your interests.

Alternatively, you could pick something that others hold in high regards. As far as I'm aware, the popular opinion of Cowboy Bebop is that both the English and Japanese dubs are similar in quality, and that the English actually exceeds the Japanese in certain aspects. However, you've said you don't like CB... so I'd be less inclined to suggest that.

The best Japanese seiyuu work can probably be found in feature length films, such as "Ghost in the Shell" and "Princess Mononoke".. of course, the same can probably be said of most American animated works, too.

Be warned that many Japanese seiyuu have higher voice pitches than we do in America. This applies to both male and female actors.. "cute" anime females (and young children) tend to have especially high voices..

I'd actually say watch a show you havn't seen dubbed before. Unless you switch between subs and dubs alot if you've seen a show dubbed first then you've accepted the actor as the character he's playing and nobody else will do, even if they're actually better(I think the oposite is also true-In the rare case a good dub comes along alot of people who saw the original first will say it sucks no matter what) Besides you don't want to waste your money on a show you've already seen :)

Do try to get a series you've been looking forward to or something that is generally accepted by most fans as a really good show for your first sub though, you don't want a bad show to leave a bad impresion of subs in your mouth. As for a specific recomendation, sense you like Pilot Candidate which is considered by most to be a bad mecha show(Though I havn't seen it personally) then you'd probably love Evangelion, which most consider to be a really good mecha show :)

(I know, their not technically mecha, close enough :P )

I must say, this one blows my mind. Being an avid sub watcher who's only seen 1 dub that met my standards, to have someone ask which anime they should watch subbed is just..... phew. I gotta get some fresh air.

Okay. I'll put it this way: I'm USED to watching things subbed. I've always read quickly, so it doesn't bother me that I have to read a line or 2 of text before I can see what's going on - I've perfected scanning the screen and catching a translation as well as the art and action. I actually find most dubs to be offensively badly-acted, so I think it's a step up to listen to the Japanese seiyuu.

But to answer the question - DO NOT start with Kodomo no Omocha (Child's Toy). You'll just be reading subtitles, and you'll get annoyed. Even I'll admit, Sana can get really annoying at the million-words-a-second pace, yelling over someone else. I think there was an episode where the translator just gave up for a few seconds.

So you'll want something not-too-dialogue-heavy, without too much dialogue going on during the action. And you'll want something where, if you miss a line of dialogue here or there, you won't lose the whole meaning of the anime.

Hmmmm.

Spriggan?
