I know that very few animes are going to be like the manga. With few like the manga and very few spot on. I have excepted this. But the Black Cat anime is so far off that it is ridiculous. There was so much nonsensical side stories added that the main story didn't make sense at times. Also, i feel that the characters had the wrong personalities which again threw off the main story. So if you get anything from this, just read the manga. It is a thousand times better.

The anime is not always in flow with the manga. I know Black Cat has a not so good ending, but generally it ain't that bad. I've read the manga, and yes it is more concrete than the anime. But what can we do, we don't hold any copyright to the series. If you really want to enjoy the anime, don't compare it with the manga.

I thought that Black Cat was an insanely generic pile of drek as a manga. The anime couldn't have really made it worse.

Well, there are few Shonen titles that are completely original, you know. IMO, the saving grace of anything is its atmosphere. One Piece is cool because the story is light-hearted and simple-minded, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is cool because of its gritty and 'punch 'im till he dies!!' way of life, and so on. If you look, shonen series don't vary very much. Sure, I'll give you this much: the story is pretty much recycled. But I like gunslinger characters. It's all about tastes, and Black Cat's gunfights draw me in like yaoi draws in fangirls (no offense). |

Well...when you think about it, there are very, very few bad guys as original as Creed. Sure, he's obsessed, creepy, and psychotic. But the dude takes that generic, cliche recipe to a degree beyond this dimension...
Regardless, shonen series ALWAYS will have at least one completely unique thing to offer, OR recycle already something cliche to levels that are considerably cool. The former example would be something like Death Note...while the latter has Bleach written all over it. |

I would pass Black Cat off as simply generic if Train wasn't the most terrible an overused shounen stereotype ever. He's just the stock "pretty boy with a mysterious and dark past that has given up his old ways as a killer to live a life of peace. Never to kill again" bullshit character that I've grown to despise with every corpuscle of my soul. With ten minutes of research I could list at least twenty other heroes like that. When characters suck terribly then you need a good plot or at least an interesting hook. When your plot sucks you need a few awesome characters and some decent dialogue. If both suck then you're totally screwed no matter what you do. Black Cat fell short in every area. So much so to the point that I could quote lines before reading them and I figured out about 99% of the plot about three volumes ahead of time. Once Train said "I wanted to tell him 'Revenge is bogus. Let it go" I slammed the tankoubon down and said "this series is a shit and I can't read it anymore." The only show that ever got away with saying crap like "this is bogus" was the Ninja Turtles and they earned that right. Black Cat isn't a hundredth of what the Turtles used to be.

The first couple of episodes were bland to me. So it was hard for me to expect great things out of it. But I managed to watch all the way to episode 24 and it wasn't that bad. I do agree with those people who say it was good up until around 10 episodes. When the crew joined each other and became more friendly with each other that didn't make it as interesting anymore. There's so many things that could've been done better. One thing stood out. In the first half of the series Train was more cold hearted, but then in the second half, he was more goofy. The transition of how that developed wasn't realistic. In the manga, that is different.
If I was to pick what anime had potential but went the wrong way, Black Cat is one of them. |

For me it was the opposite. I like the first couple of episodes where the focus was more on Sven. I was really surprised that the main character in a Shounen Jump series appeared to be older than 20. It seemed like a neat cross between City Hunter (one of my favorite Jump manga) and Speed Grapher. I also enjoyed the unconventional parallel plot structure between Sven and Train.
My first thought upon finishing the first two episodes was, thank goodness the main character isn't an adolescent boy who is an orphen who has to face a string of enemies leading up to a final boss fight in the last episode. spoiler[I think the highlight was when Saya dies, since it was an emotionally moving scene, and it also showed that the series would hit way points that would change the series dynamics unlike so many long running Jump stories. This is similar to when Saeba Ryo's partner Makimura dies. Obviously I consider the first dozen City Hunter episodes the best since it quickly digresses into running in place like most 50+ episode series.] You can imagine my disappointment with the series by the time I finished watching the second DVD. |

I found it pretty entertaining, I hadn't read the manga so I didn't go in expecting anything so I guess that may have made it more interesting in my eyes then it is given credit for...it could also be the fact that I like gunslinger shows to though. I don't know but I don't think it is so much the pile of crap people say it is, it had its moments mainly the end that sort of killed it a bit but for the most part it kept me waching. I have to agree with Randall Miashiro that spoiler[Saya's death was really moving and for me kept me watching, thinking he better whoop that mans ass for killing her I was so waiting for him to release a can of whoop ass sauce ]. The ending was a bit of a let down to say the least but the series as a whole was pretty entertaing.

Well I liked it. The anime that is, can't say I've read, or even have any desire to read the manga. And I can sympathize with your statement here. All I heard about the anime before I watched it were a bunch of negative comments; "It uses a lot of clichés," "it is boring," "the story is rushed," and all sorts of other bad things. However I found it was pretty fun to watch. I mean it is a shounen show, so I expected clichés and didn't have lofty expectations for the plot. Sure it may not be what the manga fans expect, but its rare when any anime pleases manga-first readers. Sit down take in the first intriguing couple of episodes and then just enjoy the fun and the sometimes nifty action moments. And I admit the climax leaves a bit to be desired, but it is a fun ride getting there, especially as long as you're not expecting a "masterpiece" worthy plot. However if you have read the manga, then you might not like it, depending on how you see things. Like I said I've not read it so I wouldn't be able to give you a proper comparison. |
