So I bought Gankutsuou V. 1 today and halfway through episode 3 the video/audio starts skipping around to the point that you couldn't understand anything they were saying.

I've cleaned the DVD more times that I can count and I've tried to play it on my computer with no sucess. When it get to that section the player either crashes or skips badly. I've never had a defective DVD before so is this typical? Is it my player or the computer?

Also, if it is defective does anyone know about FYE's return policy? On the receipt it says that it can only be exchanged for the exact item within 30 days of the purchase, but do you think they'd be willing to exchange it for something of equal value? It takes forever for my FYE to get things in stock and I don't want to get stuck with a defective DVD.

I've had my share of bad discs over the years, and I keep having similar circumstances happen. Also, given that you've tried your computer's DVD-ROM drive along with your DVD player, I'm inclined to say that it is the disc. If it's possible, run it through another player; my rule of thumb is that once three machines cannot play it, it's highly improbable that it's the equipment.

Go ahead and exchange it. FYE should at least be able to order in a replacement DVD for you if they don't have any in stock. Or, go for a refund; in my experience, I've gotten refunds for defective merchandise when I've asked for it.

Just take it back, they should either refund your money or special-order you a copy if they're out-of-stock. The important thing is to do it before that return window expires... at which point, you'd be pretty much out of luck.

When I bought volume 1 of When They Cry at FYE, they only had one copy and the DVD was loose. I still wanted to see it so I picked up that copy but it began freezing around episode 5. The people at FYE exchanged it for another copy.
