The candy that Shima is given at the start of the series, what is it called and is it a real candy?

According to fansub notes and Wikipedia, yes it's a real candy:

It's real. I brought some back from Japan the last time I visited as souvenirs for some of my co-workers. Although, I didn't give them quite as big a jar full as Shima had. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop

Hmm...I just assumed it was something random they invented for the show, that's interesting to learn it actually exists.

I have seen it spelled both Konpeito and Kompeito. This is typical for Japanese words with the P or B following an N getting turned into a M. You can find this in words like Tempura, kampai, hambun, yojimbo rambo, kempo, tampopo, etc.

PS I looked at the Wiki entry and they have it spelled both ways. They also use the new name for Solomon in Gundam under references, although I think it it called Konpei Island, not Konpeito Island.

I've always thought of konpeito as just rock candy. It sure does look good, though. Anime catgrin
