Xenosaga turned off a lot of people with its so very retro animation style.

It turned me off by ruining the game I loved so much....
I would like to know how the dub fares, though.

Did they ever [re-]animate the Durandal firing off massive amounts of ownage to the Gnosis horde? I can't exactly recall when but that sure was an insane amount of missiles.
I know I finished the series, but for the life of me I can't remember if I watched that part or not.

Yes, but it didn't look nearly as good. It compares better than some scenes, but that's not saying much.
Seriously the best way to enjoy the anime is to forget the game ever existed. Otherwise, it will make you cry. (And possibly want to commit acts of wanton cruelty on undeserving victims (so that others may feel your pain).)

Despite the fact that Lia Sargent and Bridgett Hoffman will "always" be Shion and KOS-MOS to me, the dub by ADV is actually not that bad at all! Stephanie Whittels pretty much nailed of what I expected Shion is supposed to sound. Heck most of the main cast sounded what I expected to a certain degree.
The one I just can't get over is the character designs. Why did Toei decided to use the character designer from Escaflowne for this?!
(of course I got a bit spoiled by the designs in Episode III; now those were SMOKIN' HOT)

Though the first game's character models weren't too hot to look at either, the anime's style really turned off many people I know.
They're like, "What's wrong with these people's faces?!"

I've never played the games before (though I've wanted to ever since I saw my friend playing), so I obviously can't compare the anime to its predecessors, but I liked what I saw. The dub was solid; the animation is very easy on the eyes (the character designs look good too), and I really like the story so far. Depending on how much money I make in the next month or two, hopefully I'll be able to buy the first volume.

I think I liked the game alot more as an Anime fan than I did as an RPG fan. For that reason, the highly Animeish style and long cutscenes didn't bother me at all infact I liked it.
Thats why I was very disapointed in Episode II which, I think because alot of people disliked the animeish style and long cutscenes, moved away from that stuff. So yeah, when they make a Xenosaga the animation Episode II (not gonna hapen, I know) then I'll check it out. For now though, Im just gonna go play through the game again.

I was expecting to really dislike the animation and characters designs because of some opinions I'd heard, but I watched that first episode last night, and I didn't have a problem with it. I thought everything looked fine. The dub seems okay too.

Watching this reminded me of my problem while playing ep.II when they changed the voices for Shion and KOS-MOS.
While the dub here was decent and everyone did a good job in conveying the emotions, I still find a hard time getting used to the new voices, especially KOS-MOS and Allen whose VA from the English version of the game even surpassed the seiyuu for those respective roles IMO.
