I've seen the first two episodes and it doesn't seem THAT hentai. About when does it get really hentai-ish?

Usually during Comiket. But the anime doesn't get "hentai-ish" at all. |

The series is one to have fanservice in it, with some crude jokes and humor in it as well, but it is not hentai. People make this mistake but believe me, you know a hentai when you see it.

Compared to the manga, the anime seems much tamer actually. (At least with the first volume. I saw much more of Chi on the page than on the screen.)
To add to the chorus line, Chobits is not a hentai. Tis more of a romantic comedy/drama. With Sci-Fi. Plus it's Clamp, so oddness and various relationships abound. How exactly would one mistake Chobits for a hentai anyway? It's not rated like a hentai, it's not (or at least shouldn't be) in with the hentai, and it's got a mainstream English dub on the official release. |

You'll find lots of fanservice and questionable content with a rather loli-ish theme in my view. But no, strictly speaking Chobits is not hentai in any conventional sense. Perhaps the somewhat softer and slightly less defined ecchi would be a more acceptable term, at least with regard to the manga and keepcase covers.

I don't even know why this was rated Mature in the Encyclopedia entry. I submitted an error report asking for it to be changed to Teenager. I've seen much more ecchi and/or violent content in other titles rated Teen, such as Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid, when spoiler[ those soldiers getting their tracheas sliced open by those assassin girls (and very detailed, I might add)] or [insert anime title with harem] where the guys just happen to land either in a girls private parts or in the middle of her (sometimes big) chest.

That's it? I've seen worse in shounen series. For instance, in Hajime no Ippo there are lots of jokes about Ippo's penis size. And in one scene, they even show a front view of him when Takamura steals his towel (thinking it would be an itty, bitty thing), when they cover his private with a big mosaic censor, and to Takumura's surprise, they then add a sound effect of an elephant blowing its trunk. Then later, they try to come up with a gimmick ring name for Ippo, and Takamura suggests "Big Mara Ippo." And Ippo asks "what does Mara mean?," when Takamura starts thrusting his pelvis and laughing maniacally. Honestly, Chobits is really tame compared to a lot of other things. If "sexual references" is all it takes to make a title Mature, Ippo should be Mature, Love Hina should be Mature, School Rumble should be Mature, GTO should be Mature, Tenchi Muyo should be Mature, etc. |

I didn't see a lot that was wrong with the manga in itself, and if the anime is tamer than the manga, then we do have an issue going on here. There's no T and A, just the "references". I don't know if A7 is still around, he's the one who probably made that entry.

Possibly someone became oversensitive to Chii spending an episode hunting for panties or something of that nature. Who knows. I'd say Chobits is borderline Ecchi as Devil Hunter Yohko is borderline hentai.

The people who tend to label Chobits as Hentai are young (i.e., ten year olds) kids. Still, yeah, it does toe the line often. For example, spoiler[in the manga, it's implied that Hideki masturbates.] |

I could understand the misjudgement. If anyone walked in on certain scenes they would yell out at me "Victoria are you watching porn!!!"
But as other said already in this thread it's not. But it is a really great series with some laughs and drama. Watch it anyway just for that. |

It's probably rated Mature because all of the DVDs carry a 16+ age rating, but you can add me to the chorus of people saying they've seen more extreme content in lower-rated series.
Frankly, I've often found the logic behind age ratings for anime DVDs (excepting hentai) to be nebulous at best. |
