Those vcds are a real rip off. They go against what the fansubbers ask *no selling. if you paid for it, you've been jupped*' And you really have been jipped if you've paid for them, unless the cost only pays for shipping and the cds. Fansubs are free. You can go download them. Course there's the whole "my connection is too slow" but you can just start a download and go to bed...
I avoid e-bay when buying anime now because it's harder to see what's a bootlege on there. |

vcds are (999,999 times out of 1 million) bootlegs. in fact, i've yet to see any legitimate anime vcds show up on ebay. all of the titles that are legit vcds are (now) older titles (produced ~1993-1995). there were also a few quicktime "video" cds, which i've only ever seen once on ebay.. once again, these "video" cds are (now) older titles (same production years). in short, i can basically guarantee that you will NOT find a legitimate vcd on ebay. also, it's rare that i see a legitimate (HK R3, or JP R2) import anime dvd on ebay.. less than 1 in 1k, I would say from a quick glance. heck, even legit R1 anime dvds are in the minority of anime dvds sold on ebay as well. :p |

I bought some 2-3 years ago. Back then I suppose the number of bootlegs weren't so bad since I got legit Lain dvs. Then again I can tell almost every legit dvd from the bootlegs. Good indicators include chinese subtitles and all-region/region free/region 0 disks. I do take the time to report bootlegs when I even go to ebay, but they don't seem to shut down accounts or anything. The rule of thumb for ebay is and always will be "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is".

Man, i got screwed with an american bootleg copy of Read or Die. The bootleg copies have a green cover. I got the standard cover with black and red. However, when I got it, the back was all in a different language. There was no chapter list or anything inside.
When I popped the disk in, it was the AMERICAN made version. It had the english dub track, perfect subtitles, and the american company logo. Yikes! I don't buy too much anime off of ebay anymore and never have bought a vcd. However, I buy and sell a lot of manga off of half.com. Now half.com is being integrated with ebay and I'm really gonna miss it. |

I buy anime off eBay all the time, but I've only wound up with one bootleg. You just have to be careful. It's not that hard....
I'm not completely against buying VCDs, provided the shows aren't licensed in the States. If they are, no buy.... If I like the series, I buy it on DVD when it comes out. If I don't, in the trash it goes... |

I plan to buy anime from eBay, however, I'll only buy anime that's sealed and brand new. I don't like buying used DVDs. I'll also only buy from well-established sellers. I've had eBay trouble in the past... so I keep my eyes open.

The only Anime I buy from eBay are VHS tapes (especially ones from the old times. *hugs her clamshell BGC 2032 set*). But then again, I have one seller to thank whom sold me a bootleg Avalon Movie...

Did you get the Japanese import? The one that would be region two? If not, I think you did get a bootlege. The Inu Yasha movies aren't out in first region dvds yet. |

If you have an Inu Yasha "import" DVD that is "from Japan" and is "region free" (a.k.a. "region 0" or "NTSC ALL" or "Playable on any DVD player") with "Chinese/English subtitles", it is a bootleg. If the seller is a "US Seller", or if the product is being shipped from "Hong Kong" it is a bootleg. If it has "Chinese/English subtitles" and is "licensed" but is "region free" it is a bootleg. If there are more than 6 episodes per disc on these "import" DVDs, they are bootlegs. I just spent the past hour strolling through ebay, looking at various combinations of keywords... "ntsc all", "region 0", "import", "chinese", "all regions", "region free" and "All Region" ~3700 -"ntsc all" -"import" -"chinese" (most likely to be legit) ~3500 -"ntsc all" -"import" +"chinese" ~2000 -"ntsc all" +"import" -"chinese" ~500 -"ntsc all" +"import" -"chinese" ~300 -"ntsc all" +"import" +"chinese" ~800 +"ntsc all" -"import" -"chinese" (here and below are least likely to be legit) ~700 +"ntsc all" -"import" +"chinese" ~200 +"ntsc all" +"import" -"chinese" ~600 +"ntsc all" +"import" +"chinese" hmm... not encouraging results. |

Yeah, I may not buy from eBay after looking through the results myself.

just FYI and a little off topic, there are some offcial releases of Battle Royale that are R0 and NTSC.
normel version http://www.battleroyalefilm.net/video/db1.html special version. http://www.battleroyalefilm.net/video/db2.html watch out though, I think that dvdasian site linked for the Korean version has bootlegs of other stuff. |

It is possible to find legal merchandise on Ebay if you check the box that searches both title and description and then enter in the title you're looking for plus either:
- the company who releases the title - the word "bootleg" A lot of sellers who sell legal merchandise make it a point to indicate that what they're selling is not bootleg merchandise. Of course, the number of such sellers pales in comparison to the number of sellers who sell bootlegs. Plus, this method only really works for American releases; good luck trying to find genuine Japanese releases in all that mess. And on a final note, I personally find it apalling when I see something like the first two "Inuyasha" movies sold together for a price below $10. It just shows how much effort is put into the making of bootlegs. |

I don't buy anime on vcd, I would rather do it myself. Being able to make your own vcd or svcd is pretty cool. The quality of the anime on the tv is great. Borrowed one of my friends made ones and it was good. Can't really complain since it was free because she downloaded them from fansubs.
