I just seen this movie last night. I wasn't sure what to expect. I knew it didn't look like most or any anime I ever seen. I knew it was from ghibli. I knew it was going to be cute a bit. It blew me away.
Its a simple story about a family and their daily lives. Who knew something like this would be funny and very heartwarming. I thought it was going to be sugary goodness that would bring out my jaded anime side, but it didn't at all.
My favorite scene is when the wife and husband were fighting over the TV in a duel off kind of way. I done this more than once with my sister so it brought me back in memories. Also the one about the son drinking sake was hilarious!
The overall animation I thought was going to suck. Again I was proven wrong. The handdrawn looking animation was made to look exactly like the strip it was taken from. The wedding speech scene and the que sara ending had the best animation i seen using these type of drawings. It didn't need to be complicated super anime looking like Air, Haruhi or any other Ghibli film. They took something simple and made it extroadinary.
I like both the dub and sub. I watched half of it dubbed and the rest subbed. The ending I watched three times though and alternated. It made me feel happy. I suggest seeing this movie if you want to feel happy.

Being the only child of my family, I found it particularly hilarious to see Noboru (the son) told his father and grandmother to stop fighting by saying "sooner or later, everything will me mine anyway!"
I believe that everyone can find one way or another to relate those characters with his/her own families. That's certainly the best part of this movie.

It really is a criminally overlooked movie. Kudos to you for being the only one besides me to have ever posted a thread about it, here or anywhere else. (So it seems).

While I've never posted a thread about it (I don't post threads about anything, mind you, except retail-related stuff) I have mentioned it a few times in posts. ^_- My Neighbor the Yamadas was such a treat to watch! I loved the art style, and some of the comedy was absolutely golden. I say some of, because a few scenes fell a little flat to me, but that happens with just about every comedy movie or series, anime or not.
I really need to buy it (I saw it via Netflix) and rewatch it soon. So much of it I've forgotten. One thing about it, however, is that it somewhat felt like it would have worked just as well as better as a sort of OAV. The constant thrust of the same sort of comedy after awhile became a little tiring. Not that I was bored of it, but I felt a bit bombarded. The next time I watch it, I'll likely watch it in about 3 parts to avoid that feeling of oversaturation. If I'd been using my better DVD player, I likely would have done so the first time around. Unfortunately, the DVD player I used likes to restart whenever you stop, rather than picking up where you left off. It was cheap, to say the least.
But still, even with wishing it was a little bit different in the actual layout, the flow of the movie was great. In some ways, it made me think of really old episodes of The Simpsons with the style of family comedy, and the occasional heartwarming moments that followed them up. It really was a clever little film, and although I watched it subbed, I rather enjoyed the dub making of extra on the R1 DVD. It was nice to see the enjoyment the actors got out of it.

My favorite part was the whole "why can't you be quiet like your sister" bit. For the record, I have never accidentally left anybody at the mall.
This is one of the ones I made my dad watch to convince him I wasn't crazy watching the Japanese cartoons.
