Are the two Ghost in the Shell movies related to either season of Stand Alone Complex or its movie, or are they separate stories (alternate universes)? How about the manga? Is that related to anything else?

The Ghost in the Shell movie is adapted from the manga (I believe, as I have not yet read the manga), and Innocence is a sequel. However, both seasons of Stand Alone Complex, plus movie, are, as the title might suggest, stand alone stories set in the GitS universe. Although it might help one become more familiar with the characters, it's not necessary to watch either of the original movies before SAC. |

Does that mean SAC takes place in a separate timeline from the movies and manga? Or is it all one universe and timeline?

It's an alternate universe. If you pay attention to certain episodes, there are similarities to the manga and original movies. Then again, the third movie (Solid State Society) is completely related to the TV series.

So there are things in common between the original movies and the manga throughout SAC, but they don't really mean anything...Alright.
I've already seen both seasons of SAC, but not SSS (I'm waiting for an HD release). I guess I'm not really missing anything by not watching the original movies or manga, then, but how is the quality of those compared to SAC, in terms of simply how good the movies or manga are? |

As mentioned SAC and the movies are in their own alternate universes, with the first movie based on the first manga of the volume. Innocence would be acting as a sequel to the movie, in the sense that spoiler[the Major got shot and has gone MIA.] There are only two volumes of GITS manga that I know of, and are in the encyclopedia. The second manga volume doesn't really have anything to do with the storyline of the first, and is centered around one character who has no relation to any of the characters from the first volume of the manga.

I really liked them, but it's a matter of personal preference. The manga is a heavy read with a lot of points that I still have trouble understanding, even with the notes in the back. Comparing the original movie with the TV series is hard, as there is a difference in storytelling and, of course, animation quality. The TV series is much more modernized and fast-paced compared to the first movie. Although the second movie has a better appearance as it's rather new, it carries a slower-paced style of storytelling. Maybe you should just rent them?

They are alternate universes.
I would add that even with this, there are connection's to be made. All of the movies and TV are roughly based on the manga. Even the newest SSS has elements in it that appear in the orignal manga, but nowhere else, not even the first Ghost movie. Arguably there are three volumes of manga, but the third is really just added stories of the second story arc which takes place 4 years after the first. 1st universe: the manga 2nd universe: the first and second movies 3rd universe: the TV show and the SSS movie The beauty of GitS is that while all of these are very separate, the creators keep the laws of the universe relatively the same. Which makes the shows extremely relatable to each other. And while you can start at any one of these points to get a different story, you will find that they are not so different that they are not relevant to each other.
The manga, I am just now on the last chapter of the second volume, and I love both of these volumes. Out of all the different universes, the manga is the only one where you will find cute comedy. And in my opinion, at least the first one is much more 'human' than any of the other stories. If you really like reading manga I would put it on your to read list, if you only somewhat like too, I would just say beware it can get a little dense if not a little ambitious. |

Dargonxtc hit it right on the button there. You really should watch the first Movies. I have them both in my collection as well as SAC series too. I think they are fantastic IMO.
This is exactly how GITS works. I'm glad too. I love SAC and it wouldn't have worked the same if it had kept with the original movie story line. I find it wonderful how it makes you think and see things in different perspectives. I could just sit there and listen to them have a conversation for a whole episode (infact there are a couple that 'are' like that. Chat room Episode 1stGIG e.g) #cough# Was starting to go off on a tangent there 
All I'm saying is, if you haven't seen the original GITS movies, get them watched. Same goes for the people who watched SAC. Give it a try and I'm sure you'll pleasently surprised

Absolutely agree, even though you don't have to watch them in order, I'd also highly recommend to watch both movies.
In my opinion, after watching all three Movies, both GiG's and all novels the Ghost world is all connected together, like a glue. In each movie, there will be small remarks or similarities to the universes. If you're a GITS fan, it's very much worth to watch and read all of it. Especially the first movie that was based on Manga that started it all. The way i saw it: - Manga, - Ghost In The Shell - movie - Ghost In The Shell: Innocence - movie - S.A.C. 1&2 GIG series - Solid State Society - movie - four Novels, with one of them prequel to Innocence movie. |

I agree also. In a sense to get the movie you need to make sure you have a background of the manga, so that there's no confusion to the issue. Watching both the movies and the sereis clears up things here and there, and they are both enjopyable int ehieir own separate entities.

Plus movies and OVAs look nicer often because they usually have a bigger budget then a tv series. So by watching the original movies you get to see the Major in even more glory and you can also see more blood and stuff if that's your thing. Manga entertainment was never short of blood in their movies hehe. As others have said they're separate entities but by watching them all you can get a better feel for the characters and their personal interactions. At least I did and would guess many others have as well. |

One neat side-effect of watching all of Stand-Alone Complex is that it changes the experience of reading the manga for me. I now hear all of the English cast in my head when I read it, and I feel the pacing of the show in the episodic nature of the manga's shorts (which, like SAC, tell individual stories while building up to a "main story"). Pretty neat.
If you go back and watch the original movie after watching SAC, you might find Mimi Woods' performance as the Major a bit off-putting. My wife is a big fan of SAC, but had never seen the movie, so when we watched it, she immediately hated the movie voice. I had that reaction to Mary Elizabeth McGlynn at first, but she eventually won me over with continued viewing of the show. Innocence, of course, has no dub unless you go to Amazon UK and get the R2 version, which has Richard Epcar's SAC cast dub. I'm waiting for either GoFish's license to expire so Manga can grab it up stateside, or to get a new TV and a good upconverting regionless DVD player to buy an R2 version. |

Never read the manga so can't comment.
Firs time I saw the movie, I didn't really like it that much but then I watched the first season of Stand Alone Complex and when I watched the movie after seeing the show, I enjoyed the movie a lot more. I think the TV series also helps you enjoy the movie a bit more because you are already familiar with the characters and care about them a little more than you would have with just seeing the movie alone. At least that was the case with me. And then I watched Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (Region 4 copy, which also has an English dub; that's what motivated me to learn how to bypass region lockouts on DVD players and I have to say doing so has a lot of advantages, but enough on that, espcially when foreign anime releases are better in some way than the American release, but enough on that). And then I bought the season 2 of the TV series. If you do want to watch the TV series, I would recommend going with the European Region 2 releases because for whatever reason Manga released those in slimpacks so they would take up less space. The TV series and the movies are two separate universes; I guess you could say they are parallel universes, but even though they are completely unrelated except for the characters (different parallel universe versions of the characters) they really enhance each other so you should watch both. |

I've watched all the franchise has to offer and find myself liking all of it, although, if I were to choose I'd definitely say Stand Alone Complex and it's film sequel Solid State Society were better and more enjoyable than Ghost in the Shell and GITS:2 Innocence were. SAC has longer more complex storylines and provides much more background info and development for the characters while still being as psychologically and philosophically stimulating. The first two movies seem kind of hollow in the character department when compared to the series' universe I think. |
