I'd like to see Millenium Actress up there, and, frankly, I like it better than Finding Nemo, but there will only be three nomination slots this year and one will go to Finding Nemo, for sure, and, frankly, I was surprised by how decent Brother Bear was after reading such negative reviews of it... it's no Lion King, but it's not Pocahontas (in a bad way) either, so I will not be surprised if Brother Bear does make it, leaving the third slot to a more unconventional candidate, but, this year, Les Triplettes de Belleville is the foreign cartoon with all the critical momentum, not Millenium Actress which played on six screens a weekend at best and, while it did get 93% on the Tomatometer, the positive reviews are from mostly uninfluential critics. Roger Ebert didn't even notice it, while he gave Triplets of Belleville ***½/*****, and Triplets of Belleville has 96% on the Tomatometer (with 51 reviews total vs. 40 for MA). I keep on hearing rumours that Dreamworks will conduct an impressive Oscar campaign for MA but I haven't seen anything yet, and I don't doubt that Sony will be doing something similar for ToB. Only time will tell, I guess.

If it's up there, I'll be rooting for it, since there are no American animated films I prefer this year, unlike last year, but Í'm not exactly holding my breath that an anime film will be nominated this time around. Of course, I'm very biased for Millenium Actress anyhow, since I was at the world premiere in July 2001.

(Finding Nemo was the weakest Pixar, IMHO, but ít's still a ****/***** affair, make no mistake about it, and I enjoyed the DVD set of it I got for Christmas just fine.)

Triplets has gotten positive reviews, but Millennium Actress is less experimental, giving it an edge. But the Academy's never known to vote for the same thing twice, so anime may not be a contender in 2004. (Unless you count Flight of the Osiris.)
