given the amount of egos in this band, they might leave. sucks though for people who paid to see this. why didn't they start doing this earlier?

This has less to do with the Japanese performers & far more to do with the con organizers. And I've heard a lot of negative about how Anime Expo is run which is why I skip it.

They're having problems with security for a few Japanese entertainers & Comic-con International deals with Hollywood types all the time? Yeah, I was less than thrilled they had to shut down an entire escalator set just to ferry Angelina Jolie in, they obviously got her in & to her panel.

I work in a theatre (albiet a smaller one where we don't bagcheck), so I think I know why this happened:

Sound check usually happens a short time before the concert starts, and doors open half an hour before the show starts (here, it might've been an hour). The bag checking probably started when they started to let people in, and it takes a long time. They should've tried to start bag check prior to the concert doors opening.

even though all concert main acts start late,
you'd think they've thought ahead. 2 hours is a loong time.

laruku at otakon started late because of the bag check and someone still caught the whole thing on video. if someone is determined to tape it, they won't leave a camera in their bag so an amateur security person can find it.

a no bag policy would've been simpler.

This just sounds like poor planning, I have a hard time believing they didn't know how many people would show up and that the likelihood of many of them having bags.

Zac and Tempest said that the concert started about 15 minutes before the ANN panel started at 6:30 and that two of the staffers - Bamboo and I forget who the second one was - were there so he couldn't introduce them to everyone.

I don't know what the reason was, but 3 + hours late in inexcusable.

Yuck; I'd hate to have to wait over two hours (or more) for a concert to start after it was supposed to.

I agree that a "no bags" policy would have been so much simpler.

I seem to recall issues with Clamp when they were there.
I speak to people who attend both Anime Expo & Comic-con International & the general tone is Comic-con knows what they're doing while Anime Expo still has a ways to go.

Haha! I was working at the Peace Bonding Station at Registration when this was supposed to start. They had so many tickets left over that they started handing them out to everyone leaving Registration. They even gave us a bunch to hand out. Heh, I didn't go, but I kept a ticket as a souvenir.

SOS Brigade concert tomorrow! I'm going! Yay!

Wasn't there a delay with the exhibition hall as well? I thought it was scheduled at 10am. When I got there, I had to wait two hours just to get in. Ridiculous. Everything seemed so unorganized.

The exhibit hall has always opened at noon time for the last couple of years I've gone to AX; I didn't even know they were planning to open earlier this year.

What was crazy about the SKIN concert was that even though we paid for Premier tickets, in hopes of NOT having to wait in line, we STILL had to wait in line to get in. We had to wait, in the baking heat, FOREVER, since they took a long time to check bags. Then, when we got in, the staff couldn't decide whether or not to allow us to use our cameras. First we were told no. Then someone told us yes, as long as we weren't using a professional photo lens camera. The security member who told us that said he even checked with his supervisor, and the supervisor said that's the only condition. But THEN, after getting our hopes up, some guy at the last minute right before the concert was about to begin was walking around telling us to put our cameras away and we would get escorted out if we used our camera.

It was all well worth it in the end because SKIN's performance was so unbelievably awesome. Originally I just got the tickets for my sister, and I've never been a fan of any of the members, not even Gackt or Miyavi, but I've definitely been converted. The fact that we got killer fourth row seats helped a little too. Smile The wait was painful, but the concert more than made up for it.

What was unbelievably INEXCUSABLE though was the AMVs. We had to wait to get into that as well, after a very long, tiring day of waiting for the Exhibit Hall and the SKIN concert. We waited in line for more than 1:30 (right after the SKIN concert), and some folks waited far longer than that, only to be told when we got in that they couldn't show any categories other than AMtv because the guy who organizes the AMVs (I just know him as the emcee guy), got his laptop stolen. Not that I don't want to sympathize with the frustration of losing a laptop, but what really pissed me off was that they didn't tell us this early on while we were in line so that we wouldn't have to wait. They could've sent the AX volunteers to tell us to disperse, that the AMVs were to be rescheduled. On top of that, something always seems to go wrong when this guy has the sole copy of the AMVs. After all these years, why haven't they smartened up yet and get another person to hold on to a BACK-UP copy??? THAT whole debacle was just pathetic as hell.

Two more concerts to go and then the Masquerade (for us at least)...I hope they've learned something from this first day so they could improve the organization of the following events.

It's because of things like this that I don't go to "MAJOR EVENTS" at conventions...too many lines, delays, and restrictions (reasonable or not), when I could be doing more off-beat, low-key things at smaller panels. Either that, or having a few drinks at the hotel bar Very Happy

Though I did go to Kotoko's concert at Akon last year, which was good. Despite all the security efforts, I did see one guy taking a couple of still shots with a camera. I thought about telling security, but I'm not a narc.

Too bad about the AMVs though. I would think that "teh biggest" con would have a backup, but apparently not. I'll have to remember that point for the convention I staff at, even though I'm not connected to the AMV event.
