I was one of the many people who saw Naruto in theater on June 6th. I was rather impressed with it, considering anime movies in my personal opinion tend to not be that good. The meat and potatoes of anime tend to be in the TV series and mangas. The group that showed up for it was pretty lively. A few very impressive cosplayers. Lots of people of all ages. Very interesting stuff for someone like me who has never gone to a convention or anything like that.
The big issue came up about 10 minutes before the movie started and about 20 mins after it ended. There were many little kids there who apparently had brain disorders requiring them to scream their guts out arbitrarily through the entire movie. I kind of knew what I was getting into. I love Naruto, but I know some of it's fanbase is a little too vocal. I figured I'd just shut up and deal with it at first. Two or three little kids ended up ruining it for everyone else though. Even the little 10 year old next to me started complaining about it to his Mom. "Mom, this isn't how I wanted to see the movie. I can't hear anything. Some kid is screaming in my ear. Let's just buy the DVD in 2 months." The noise level was just too high. I eventually got my money back, despite buying online non-refundable tickets.
I appreciate Mr. Lou Petrich of Cinemark 18 Pittsburgh Mills Mall making this right for me by refunding my money. I noticed during the showing they had no "be quiet during the movie" message (like it would have helped), and no one in the theater moderating things a little. It's Naruto. I think it might need it a little. It was Viz's direct feed and NOT in Cinemark's control.
How do I contact Viz or the "powers that be" to show my approval for this movie being run in theater, as well as state my issues with the showing? They don't seem to have anything on their site for average Joe types like me to contact them with. I want some kind of relevant closure on this. I want to know someone at Viz can hear me. When they show the second movie eventually, I won't be any happier with the loud mouth brat behind me screeching "Rasengan" every 4 seconds from start to end or booing Sasuke with a high pitched screech loud enough to drown out the combination of an already loud crowd AND a theatrical movie.

I don't think Viz can do anything about the kind of issue you encountered, so there's no point in telling them about it. It's good that the movie theater manager/person refunded your money. I think in these situations that's how it should go. Viz can't be held responsible.
If anything, you should ask your local movie theater manager/personnel to be prepared for such issues the next time a Naruto movie or whatever comes out. That way they can at least put extra ushers or something inside the show to try to keep the kids quiet, or refund your money again in case they can't.

Why exactly would VIZ be to blame? I would think it would be up to the theater to enforce the "quiet during the movie" rule. And since you had your money refunded, what's the problem?
Also, VIZ is notorious for staying out of contact with fans. Even if you were able to contact them, the chance that you would get a satisfying reply is not very good.

Oh, I think you might misunderstand me. Viz isn't "to blame." They should be aware though. I think some fans got alienated here a little and some subtle encouragement to be quieter wouldn't hurt anyone. Laugh at the funny parts, cheer at the exciting parts. Maybe boo Sasuke once if you have to (do the kids even know why they hate him yet, or is it just cool to?). That's all free game. This was out of hand. Viz can do their little part right? Maybe have "Naruto" give a short "Don't be rude, be quiet" monologue or something at the start? I don't know. Every little bit could help. If no one tells Viz, will they "get it"?
It's definitely up to the theater staff to keep things under control. I think I may contact General Manager Lou about a pre-emptive plan for the next one (should they show the second movie). It's a good idea, though I can't imagine them really caring THAT much. To a lot of employees there, I am sure this movie is rather unimportant.
I didn't know Viz doesn't like dealing with fans directly. I guess I don't entirely blame them. If they took every piece of fan or hate mail (via snail mail or e-mail) I bet they wouldn't have time to do real work. Even so, I kind of thought this was a fairly legit customer service issue. Meh, guess there is only so much one person can do with stuff like this.

They make so little noise in theaters in Japan that it is scary. My friend and I once got yelled at by some Japanese dudes after a movie because we laughed at the funny parts. But then again, I haven't gone to many children's movies here, and in general the rules of politeness don't apply to children under 12 in Japan.

Yeah, I don't think contacting Viz will do anything at all. Even if they listened to you and completely agreed with everything you said there's not a thing they could do about it or a thing they could do in the future to prevent it. You can make them aware of it but there's little they could even do in regards to damage control either.
The theater is who you'd have to take the issue to and at best you could suggest Viz do the same, however I imagine Viz is just happy they found a theater willing to play the film so who knows what they'd do. There's no reason people who are being that insanely disruptive in a movie should be allowed to stay, I know around here a lot of local theaters will not hesitate to remove problem people.

Hi there, welcome to the wonderful world of movie theatres. Alot of Anime fans arent very familiar with this, theyre used to watching stuff at home on DVD or on the computer. Unfortunately, if you want to see something on the big screen, you gotta deal with the crowd in which lies a problem of probability. If you cram a whole load of people into a theatre, youre bound to have at least one jerk who ruins the movie for everyone else. Its something you gotta accept if you wanna ever see movies in the theatre. This brings me to my other point.
Hi there, welcome to the wonderful world of Naruto fandom. I don't wanna make any blanket statements, so let me just say, at least a large part of Naruto fandom is made up of dumb little immature kids. Again, its something youre just gonna have to learn to deal with if you wanna be a Naruto fan.
What Im getting at here is basically, whatcha gonna do? Firstly like everyone said, its really outta VIZ's control. Even in terms of the theatre, its tough for them to do much in this situation. If theres one jackass in the theatre causing trouble, the they can do something about it. But when the people deing disruptive outnumber the people who are bothered by this, its tough for the theatres to do much about it.

Yeah, they're in every movie theater, not just Naruto. How old were these screaming kids?
And anyway, blame the kids' parents. It's their responsibility to keep them under control, and an usher should've been handy to shush them.

Everyone was a bit loud. Louder than any movie I have ever seen, including kids movies. There were only a small handful of excessive problems though. Maybe like... 4 kids who were louder than the movie/crowd and just screamed from beginning to end for no real reason other than to scream. Mind you, I was at all 3 Pokemon movies when they showed, and nothing NOTHING close to this happened.
As I said, I partly knew what I was getting into. I realize if you see a movie in public, you deal with the public. I'm just curious at what point does it become an issue. I was asked next time to talk to a manager and try to get whoever kicked out although "it's harder when it's everyone."
I was also ready for the fact it's just Naruto. Naruto has the largest and loudest fan community. Again, when does it cross the line? I am at least glad most of the more enthusiastic people were not being jerks or loudmouths. Only one older fan got annoying. He kept berating Sasuke, even during the breif Q&A with the voice actors at the opening. Thankfully he shut up most of the time.
I'll definitely have a better plan of action next time. I got my money back, but it was more symbolic of being heard. I probably won't ask for my money back next time even if it goes poorly. Other measures will be taken instead.

Haha.
Sad, but I tend to agree. Naruto is aimed at a younger audience, so the movie will attract such a group, whether you like it or not. Slap on rabid Narutard fandom and you're in for some fun. I wish that some members of the anime community were a little more...socially responsible, but there's not much you can control there. Even in the rare occasion that VIZ were to hear your pleas and attempt to make changes in the movie showing, you can't change the mindset of young, volatile, immature kids. Until the fanbase itself changes, don't hold your expectations too high. If you can't beat them, join them? Actually, please don't.
I feel for your situation though, since I get annoyed pretty easily when people are so loud that they just ruin the experience for you.
