First-according to www.nausicaa.net -he adds a red tint to the region 2 dvd of Spirited Away, and now he's actually ok with the film being edited. Can we say "sell out"?

Edit: On a side note, re-reading the Spirited Away article, you must be pretty stupid not to know what is a graphic novel.

I disagree with you on both parts. Miayazaki was only okay with cuts that were okayed by Lasseter. In otherwords he trusted Lasseter not to make any cuts unless they were necessary... And that trust was amptly rewarded by Lasseter not making any cuts.

Nonetheless, I was surprised to read that Miyazaki was okay with any cuts in any circumstances.

As for Graphic Novels, anyone who doesn't follow the comic book industry has no reason to know what a graphic novel is. It might seem like an every day common item to you, but I wager that most people do not have any idea what a GN is.

*meekly raises her hand*

I didn't know what a graphic novel was until I asked my husband a few months ago. Thanks for sticking up for the uninformed (NOT STUPID) anime fans, Tempest Smile

Your bieng totally unfair to Miyazaki. He's not a sellout in anyway.
Not only that but Lucas is hardly what I would call a sell out.Admittadly he trys to grab every dollar he can with the Star Wars franchise but he's never sold out.he's had numerous chances to sell Star Wars but wont because he wants it remain original to his ideas. Also the fact that he's directing episodes 1,2 and 3 shows that he's not sold out,if he had he would have cast away the responiblity to another director. After all his good freind Spielberg basically begged Lucas to allow him to direct one of the Star Wars movies but Lucas said no.

I would argue that just because Miyazaki is okay with the film being edited, it doesn't make him a sell-out. If he is allowing the film to be changed from its original nature, then the edits must seem okay to him. Besides, try to see this form his point of view. Let's say that in a given situation, exagerrated of course, if he has the choice between making a few edits and allowing millions of people around the world to see the ideals and thoughts that he wanted to express in his film, or not allowing any edits and making the product of his staff and his own hard-work unaccessible to the public, wouldn't you choose the first? Granted, the situation is rather exagerrated, I'd rather let the public see the film than not at all.

The red tint thing just confuses me.

Sake: Yeah, but Miyazaki was a man who personally overlooked every scene for the Mononoke dub to insure it was unedited, after the Warriors of the Wind debacle. In fact, he was evenm reluctant to sell the Ghibli franchises because of the Nausicaa butchering. So I'm wondering why he's changed.

I guess I'd have to see what kind of edits he's okaying. Things he might have wanted to change anyway? Or did he just hand it to someone and say, "Okay, whatever you want to do with it"?

Because I find it very hard to believe that someone who works so closely with his work until it's a finished product could be considered a sellout.

Or, for that matter, why selling out is such a bad thing.

Well, you won't get any such chance. In the end there were no edits.
