Hello all,
I'm currently researching on urban representation in anime and asking you anime experts for help. I'm looking for anime (preferably feature films, but I take OVA and series as well), that contain shots of buildings, that are moving and shifting in relation to another to create a certain sense of depth. It is done with multiple plates and is sometimes called parallax effect. I already found examples in two rather well known anime (minus the movement, but I reckon you know these films): Akira: Ghost in the Shell: So I'm looking for more like this. It needn't be futuristic cityscapes, but I guess they're certainly more common. Movement can go in any direction, but it should be facades of buildings. Just point me to some films and I sort them out myself. If you happen to have timecodes, that would be sweet obviously. So thanks all in advance for letting me feed on your endless viewing knowledge. PA Works has done some beauties in recent times.
Shanghai from the opening scene from the first episode of Canaan: New York from the opening scene from episode 12 of Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom: |

And for a vertical version, there's that bit halfway through ep. 2 of NGE!

I think I remember something like that in Cardcaptor Sakura, not sure what eps though, it's been about 10 years since I have seen it.

Thank you for your input.
The moving Tokyo 3 from Evangelion completely slipped my mind, really a nice one. The movement implicated here is not that of an observer (like in the examples I gave) but of the buildings itself. Curiously, the suggested examples by P.A. Works are exactly NOT what I'm looking for. The movement constructed in these images derives from the CG-generated perspective of the buildings and not from the movement of flat surfaces commonly found in old school cell animation. Surely, in the Canaan case it is kind of hybrid, but the perspective is there none the less (note the shortening of the sides of the buildings in relation to the viewing position). The New York from Phantom is actually the most far away from what I'm searching, a nice counter-example to the effect I described and certainly a testament to the effect of CG images in anime. |

Well, some [bleep] came along and removed my post for some reason, but there's a great parallax scene in Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Sorry, it's been a while since I've seen the series, but it's in the episode where Itsuki shows Kyon his power and takes a cab ride to get there.

Also, the R.O.D the TV opening has some parallax, but it is probably all C.G. There may not be any use of computer generated perspective, however. I couldn't tell. R.O.D the TV

And if urban representations in anime are your thing, you have to work in a reference to the Chicago of Gunsmith Cats (which I'm sure fits in a parallax skyscraper thing at one point in that title sequence).

Though its instances aren't extensive, I believe this technique is used during the montage of urban scenes in the middle of the second Patlabor film. Cuts between successive shots are far from rapid, so it is unlikely that one will fail to notice the effect in use.

I've always been very interested in the use of cityscapes in anime for dramatic and artistic effect, so I have a number of titles that come to mind. I don't know if they meet the criteria you're looking for but I'm going to name 6 anime movies and series that place heavy emphasis on building architecture and cityscapes. Sorry I don't have actual examples, just titles you'll have to find and view.

@Past
Lovely choices. And Kiki's Delivery Service is also very much about the idea of the city, even if it's a low-rise city with an old centre. It's a great favourite of mine partly for this reason. (Given Kiki's zipping around, I bet there are some parallax effects there too. I'm sure I'll be watching again within the next week, so I'll look out.) |

Here's one suggestion in the futuristic/sci-fi department.
The music video for Ken Ishii's track 'extra' directed by Koji Morimoto features such shots from 1m47s to 2m00s and again from 2m08s to 2m13s. These are very short but worth mentioning because the camera movement is quite unusual. The camera is tracking a flying motorbike 'thing' so the movement is a kind of circular swerve. Another one by Morimoto from the intro to MTV Japan's top 20 in 2000: It's right at the start of the video. |

Thank you all for your recommendations. It seems I have quite the viewing to do. Please continue to post if you think up more examples.
