some say that my beautiful girl mari is one of the pivotal animations that will bring korean works into spotlight...question is...is there a market for Korean animes in Korea?

From all the Korean animation trailers I saw at BAAF, I would think there is a market in Korea already since they are testing waters over here in the US (Central Park Media has already licensed Doggy Poo). Most don't resemble Japanese anime but the ones that do look kick-ass and I'm hoping that a few titles will make it to our shores. |

In all honesty, the more that don't resemble Japanese Animation the better. I like it when things don't try to be other stuff (Hello megatokyo)

Big K: Actually, there isn't a market right now. Read http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/international/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1962576.
Korean animation has a better chance of being picked up, and distributed, because unlike the Japanese, Koreans don't charge outrageous licensing fees for everything under the sun. (Of course that might've actually prevented Volcano High from being raped by MTV...) I think it really depends on how much the government's willing to compete with the Japanese by subsidizing animated productions. |

Cool link Gatsu. Anyone else catch Lee Sung-gang's quote that Japanese and American animation have reached the limits of their originality?

Thanks, Gatsu. Good article. Looks like the only thing they know how to do is the animation. Everything else like story and marketing is new to them. I had assumed that they must have done their own stuff by now but I guess I was wrong. I just realized now, most of the trailers at BAAF, strorywise, didn't really appeal to me except for 2 anime-looking action flicks and Doggy Poo (the full version of which I watched 3 times and thought was interesting storytelling). |
