So the other day I saw a box set of Galaxy Railways DVDs on the shelf at a CD store. I contemplated buying it, since I had heard alot of positive things about this show, and I love the artwork.. it looks so pretty! However, the high price was what detered me from making a purchase. Not that its an outrageous price, it was only like.. around 50 bucks or so, which is a good deal considering how much is in that thing. But its still alot of money to invest on a show that I dont know if Ill like or not.
Iv heard it touted as a major classic, one no anime fan should be without. Iv seen bits and peices of a few of the others in the same continuity, Queen Millenia, Queen Emeralda, Maetal Legend, and Captain Harlock has always looked very interesting to me. But I haven't really seen enough to know if I like it enough to lay down 50 bucks for an entire box set of Galaxy Railways.
Maybe if I had seen the first disc on the shelf, I would have bought it out of curiosity, but the entire box set seems a little exsesive to be going out on a limb for.
So what do you guys think? Galaxy Railways, how good is it, really?

From what I'e seen of it, Galaxy Railways looks pretty good. However, I haven't seen much. It never hurts to scout around on anime selling websites to see if you can find a cheaper price... I personally am getting it at the shop because the shipping is high on most copies I can find.

I have been watching some episodes after Kodocha on the Funimation channel and from what I have seen it is a pretty good series. Although the series itself is not just about people operating trains the whole time. They show other things like the SDF doing missions.

At first, I didn't much care for Galaxy Railways, because the idea of an organized train military seemed to me to take a lot of the mystique and whimsy out of Matsumoto's mythos. Instead of a handful of 1800s-style space locomotives taking daring adventurers to places unknown, there were now fleets of super-futuristic trains battling political enemies and terrorists and whatnot.
However, the more I watched of it, the more I realized that was not the case at all. The show's themes are still very much the same as the ones Matsumoto celebrates in Harlock, Emeraldas, Galaxy Express, etc., and the various worlds the cast visit are all still very much in the whimsical spirit of past Matsumoto works. And speaking of the cast, the characters are all very well written and very likable. Even the jerks like Bruce have a charm to them that keep you from hating them, and this is honestly one of the few shows I've seen where no major characters stand out as at all obnoxious or irritating. Not even some of my all-time favorite series can boast that.
Long story short, it's not the greatest show I've ever seen, and I started out disliking it on the surface, but it's pretty damn good overall, and well worth the price tag.

I saw the first disc at a convention last weekend, it wasn't overly entertaining to me, and didn't make me want to go out and buy the rest. I did stick arround and finish the volume though since I had nothing better to do and the chair was comfy after being on my feet for a couple hours. If you like the guy's other works then you'd probabally like it. The only other one on that list I've seen is Queen Emaraldas which I didn't care for either.

I felt that it was well worth buying the individual releases for this series. It reminds me the most of Yamato since the main characters work together as a team. In most of Matsumoto's series you will find a really strong protagonist who all the other characters support. Railways has a nice balance of characters that are all strong. I will agree that the artwork is pretty good and is far better than Cosmo Warrior Zero which it also resembles, but the Geneon released Herlock wins for best animated Matsumoto series in my opinion.
