Seems like a Newtype USA clone to in my opinion. Anybody else agree?

To a point it is like NewType USA, but the advantage it has is that it's an independent magazine instead of a licensed product of a company (like ADV) so it has a little more freedom with it's content. I think it's definitely worth checking out.

GREAT news. I've always been a fan of Patrick Macias' writing, as soon as he started working for Animerica and Pulp back in the day. And it will be great to have an independent anime magazine. I look at what Animerica has turned into these days and I weep.

I never did think a whole lot of Animerica, even back in the day. This magazine does sound promising, especially for everyone's wallet. Hopefully this magazine will not ignore Canada like Newtype USA does though the title doesn't sound promising. Whats wrong with saying Otaku NA? Be nice to NOT be excluded....

But isn't that an 'American' tradition? <grin> Seriously I expect anyone who expects this to be a clone of existing magazines will be surprised. Given Patrick's work over the years I expect him to bring in writers who will be covering a large range of subjects and often in ways neglected by other magazines. When I first started watching anime in 1995, Animerica was my bible, and I still read those old issues almost constantly. Heck, I was just doing some research on Wings of Honneamise, and Animerica's cover story on the film and their huge 4-part interview with Gainax's Toshio Okada were godsends. I'd say the mag's peak years were from '96-2000 or so. The last couple years as a monthly mag were pretty awful, though. When they started printing those columns by Kojiro Abe (whose grasp of the English language was pretty tenuous, especially considering despite his pen name he was American and not Japanese), I knew the end couldn't be too far off. The version they give away now in Waldenbooks/Borders is basically like an advertising circular. Pfah.... Where's Trish Ledoux when you need her?
Most people read "NA" and they think "not applicable," not "North America." I'm not surprised with the "USA" part of the name.....it's certainly zippier than any other similar title that comes to mind ("Otaku North America", "Otaku America", "American Otaku"....they all seem more vague to me). |

Protoculture Addicts is an independent anime magazine. So is Anime Insider. And ADV has zero control over Newtype's editorial content. None whatsoever. The magazine is published by the company but the staff is very separate. |

Yeah, I meant to say "another" independent anime magazine, my mistake. I certainly didn't mean to overlook Protoculture Addicts, especially with how eagerly I'm awaiting their next issue. 
Also, I wouldn't consider Anime Insider, or anything published by Wizard, as being "independent" even if it isn't tied to an anime release company. Wizard's as corporate-driven as they come, admitting not too long ago that the coverage in their flagship magazine is basically bought by the comics companies, making Wizard magazine not much more than a couple-hundred page advertisement. While I haven't heard that Anime Insider has the same deal, it certainly isn't much of a stretch to assume so. |

This sounds pretty cool. I've been wanting to get another anime magazine. Otaku USA sounds a lot like Newtype USA, but hoepfully Otaku USA's content will be better. (I personally don't like Newtype USA that much, other than the DVD in it.) I've also been wanting to try out Protoculture Addicts, but I can't find it anywhere. I guess I'll just have to subscribe to it.
Btw, it says here that the magazine is supposed to launch in June. |

Well, semi-publicly, anyway. As reported by Rich Johnston in his Lying in the Gutters column, when Wizard relaunched their WizardUniverse.com website, they sent out two different versions of their form letter, one of which had some very telling language in it....
