Anyone not following this case on Twitter should know how deeply Anycolor messed up on this, and how this will probably be the beginning of the end for the company, as well as a turning point for Vtubers as a whole. I just wish the Nijisanji Vtubers still a part of the EN branch the best of luck. This has not been easy for any of them.

I don't follow vtubers in general, can you explain how it will be a turning point for those of us who don't? |

I've been hearing about this from other folks in the space, and it sounds incredibly messed up. I really feel bad for Selen, and I hope that they will be alright.
I watched CyYu (Alejandro Saab)'s VOD speaking about the topic today, and how he was approached to join Nijisanji at one point but rejected the offer when they wanted him to give up being a voice actor... That sounds so wrong on many levels. Adding in what all else has come out recently... it just doesn't seem right at all, and makes me wonder if more Vtubers might be better off without an agency? But I admit my frame of reference is very small, so perhaps I have no room to question the pros and cons of such a thing. |

So what did they actually do?
Is it negativity associated with idol contracts preventing people from behaving in certain ways? |

It's sad seeing the state of the idol industry.

The Idol industry has been a mess for a long time, many people who worked in it will tell you. The issue is that until recently, it along with a lot of other issues that japan has, were always swept under the rug. These last few years has been seeing a shift in the idol industry and other media/work industries about all these abuses and unethical work practices and major scandal reveals, that it is a major shock just how much was going on and still is going on right now. I do hope they find help and a better work environment, for a company to try to put the blame on them, to the point she even considered to try too K''l herself and coming out with a statement providing false reason in regards to her treatment is such ... i can't even think the right words. I'll be upfront; I mostly follow Hololive and indie Vtubers, so I'm not completely informed on everything Nijisanji related. However, I did like Selen and a few other Nijisanji members, so I'll do my best to explain in short what I mean, with links if I can. CONTENT WARNING: MENTIONS OF BULLYING, TOXIC WORK ENVIROMENT, AND SELF HARM. So as the article says, Anycolor terminated Selen's contract, meaning her content was immediately privated and her Twitter deleted. The official statement states several reasons why, but basically it boils down to: 1. Selen did not get proper authorization for a cover of the LilyPichu song. 2. She had not properly paid commission fees to creators she hired for her projects. 3. Talks with management deteriorated, leading to conflict with them and "other livers (the other members). She had taken a break on December 26th because she had been hospitalized and made the decision not to return. She did not tweet anything until the termination happened. Now, when a contracted VTuber debuts, they usually either had an indie account of their own or did some other form of content creation. Normally it is considered taboo to reveal a Hololive or Nijisanji's past life (pl) account, since you want to respect the privacy of the VTuber, and it would break their NDA, or non-disclosure agreement. However, a couple of hours after Selen's termination notice, a Twitter account by the name of dokibird basically revealed themselves to be Selen in her PL account. She broke her silence on Twitter: https://twitter.com/dokibird/status/1754459958119432664 She revealed that she had been hospitalized because of bullying and the toxic work environment over at Nijisanji, and that December 26th was the day she put in to leave the company. The company had taken away her social media platforms from her and told her to stay silent about the issues, but after being terminated, she went ahead and conveyed why she had gone radio silent. Further analysis of the official statement also revealed some suspicious holes in Anycolor's story. Lilypichu herself stated in a Twitter post that she did give permission to Selen for her song: https://twitter.com/LilyPichu/status/1754736476762640409. Also, one commissioned artist that Selen had hired stated that Selen had paid for all her projects out of pocket; it was Anycolor themselves who delayed paying the commissioned artists: https://twitter.com/weeniedesu/status/1754600196103938462?s=20 Anyway, the response to the official statement on Twitter was poor, with most agreeing that Anycolor had treated Selen terribly, and the other Nijisanji English members under the bus. All remaining members have had their subscriber counts go down, Nijisanji's sponsors are pulling themselves out of sponsorships, and Anycolor's stocks have gone down. It looks like the EN branch may be terminated all together, like their Indonesian branch had been, if they don't do something to rectify the situation soon. Sorry this ended up being so long. I left out quite a bit, but that's the gist of it. Also, if putting all of this out there is a problem for the moderators, please let me know. |

Man, it's wild to see a Vtuber company torpedoes their reputation this badly. And I fear the talents of the Nijisanji EN branch are probably going to get screwed over in the future.

What really blows some holes in Anycolor's actions is how they made their statement at around 8 am, when most people are just waking up (and Dokibird/Selen wouldn't have had a decent chance of responding until the news really made its way around). Serious "Vshojo announcing Silvervale's departure at 11 PM when she's in the middle of a stream"-vibes.
Doki's at least been able to turn it around; she got 200,000 subs practically overnight in the wake of the ordeal, and she's pushed Nijisanji to make a statement insisting that Selen's departure totally won't make a difference to their bottom line (because people can just afford to lose talents with 800,000 followers). It's a bad time to try and become a corporate vtuber, I think. |

Hoo boy! This gonna be long. For people who aren't aware, Nijisanji EN's been losing talent left and right lately. Last summer two of their biggest talents, Nina Kosaka and Mysta Rias quit and joined Vshojo. Fast forward to December, Selen makes a music video for her cover of "Last Cup Of Coffee and wants to put it out on Christmas. Video is set to private, even though Selen thought she had permission from management. Selen disappears for awhile and then tweets that she had an accident and won't be streaming for awhile . A few days later, Niji EN's biggest talent, Pomu announces her graduation (also rumoured to be going to Vshojo). On her way out the door, she decides to release her members only streams to the public. In the streams it was revealed that she was miserable and management cheated her out of a "Once In A Lifetime Opportunity". Member's only stream disappears. Weeks later, another Niji EN member, Kyo also annonunces he's graduating. Fast forward to now, Niji is claiming that Selen was fired for the music video incident. Right after the termination notice went out, Selen took to her old Twitter account to reveal that she experienced "Bullyiing from within", and the accident she had at Christmas was actually a suicide attempt. ..And now you're caught up. Long Story short, Niji EN. Is not looking good right now. |

Honestly, I don’t follow VTubers but I read ANYCOLOR’s announcement and the first thing I thought was “what dumb ass put this statement out?”. It screams of victim blaming and shaming. It’s also not on official company letterhead nor is it signed by the CEO, which is another red flag for me.
As new public information continues coming to light about ANYCOLOR’s claims, I hope her legal counsel fucks that horrible company seven ways into next year and owns them at the end of the day. I suspect she could do a much better job running the company than the current imbeciles. |

For those curious, Rima Evenstar has a pretty in-depth video on the Nijisanji situation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FWsonE3LIA
I'm glad I stuck with HoloLive. |

Responding to an event where a talent is pretty much shafted by her agency with agency tribalism is, uh, not the best response in the world--especially not with how Hololive tossed Kiryu Coco under the bus... |

They didn't throw her under the bus, she was around for months after the Taiwan thing, and she herself said why she left. And recently, wasn't Mel also terminated for rule breaking? And you don't see people being vicious about it because it was handled in such a way where everyone, even Mel, was fine with it. Hololive has their fair share of fuckups, but NijiEN is actual black company material. |
