So as far as East Blue villains go, I only see Morgan and Arlong in that cast list. Seems like they'll be skipping and/or combining a lot of arcs. But that's inevitable when you only have...eight episodes?

I never thought I'd say this, but One Piece doesn't have enough episodes!

Also, Oda what the hell is this:

Quote:
Considering my expected life-span, this is my last chance to bring One Piece to the entire world.

That's...kinda morbid, bro. You're not even 50 years old yet.

Also, he already HAS brought One Piece to the entire world! Does Oda not know how popular the series is overseas? How many languages it's been translated into? Because it's a lot! And if he doesn't know that, it's honestly pretty sad.

Not to mention the anime, unless he feels like more people will check out a live-action adaption than either the manga or anime but I feel the anime will still be the better realization of his vision.

But at least he seems satisfied with how this is turning out.

Alvida and Buggy are cast but just not included in the article for whatever reason. Klahadore is Captain Kuro. The only glaring omission is Don Krieg and Smoker if they really go as far as Lougetown.

So we’re getting 8 episodes, 10 would have been better, but it’s gonna be 8 so that might be a little tight, but the episodes are going to be mostly around 1 hour so it might be enough. I checked IMDB for the episode titles and found that not only do they have episode titles, but they also have the runtime for each episode. Assuming this is accurate, it could be wrong, here is where we’re at

Episode 1 Pilot 1 hour 9 minutes This is most likely Luffy’s origin, plus the Alvida stuff, not sure if they’re going to do Zora’s stuff in this episode, but given that the episode is so long, they could potentially add his stuff into there.
Episode 2 An Old Friend of Mine 1 hour 4 minutes. This has to be the Orange town arc with Buggy the Clown, and it’s this episode that makes me think the Zoro introduction arc will be in episode 1, but it could very well be in this episode
Episode 3 Tell No Tales 56 minutes. This is going to be the Syrup Village Usopp arc, and it looks like it’ll all be 1 episode. I think that’s enough for Syrup Village as I always felt this arc dragged a little bit
Episode 4 A Frog In The Well no runtime. This is definitely the Baratie arc not sure if it’s going to be 1 episode or 2, I’d think it would be 2 episodes, but the next episode title throws that into doubt.
Episode 5 All Races in One Sea 58 minutes. Not sure if this is still Baratie, the mention of the sea makes me think it is, but the all races part clearly points to Arlong Park. I'm hoping it's half and half, that this episode ends the Baratie arc and starts the Arlong Park arc.
Episode 6 Tangerine Grove 1 hour 4 minutes Arlong park, this is tied with episode 2 as the second longest episode. I’m thinking it’ll be the Arlong Park stuff up until the Marines steal Nami’s money, possibly ending with her begging Luffy for help, but they might shift that into the next episode
Episode 7 Crewmates 56 Minutes If this isn’t the climax of the Arlong Park arc I’ll be surprised as that’s where Nami fully becomes a member of the crew, but it could also be some of Rogue Town.
Episode 8 Grand Line 1 hour 6 minutes Most likely Rogue town and them ending with the journey up the waterfall to The Grand Line ending before Laboon

So provided the episode titles and runtime is correct it’s looking like this season will be around 8 hours. Of course episode 4 not having a runtime listed could be evidence that the info on IMDB is fake. If my speculation is correct then it looks like the largest amount of focus is going to be on Arlong Park which is the correct decision as it’s the best arc of the East Blue saga. Provided my speculation is correct, Arlong Park arc will be anywhere between 2-3 hours long. The only arc I’m worried about not having enough time for is the Baratie arc, I’m nearly positive that the arc will bleed into episode 5 and possibly take up half of that episodes runtime, I mean they build the Baratie set so I don't see them using it for only 1 episode. We also don’t have an episode lengthier for episode 4 which is weird that it’s the only one. Of course, this is all assuming the info on IMDB is correct and for all we know the information could be incorrect. But if it is correct then I think they probably have enough time to tell the story

Hour episodes aside, it’s clear that it’s going to be a tight fit. Doable? Yes, but very tight.

This is going to be rough. Oda confirming that he at least has some form of veto power is the best we’ll get to a vote of confidence until we see actual footage, which given Netflix is doing their Tudum special in June, will probably be then.

The "cultural differences" bit is worrying. If a work of art is successful, the best route would be changing it as little as possible imho, even considering the differences between media.
Heck, even if it isn't much successful, changing a work of art (or, more in general, a creative work) too much may be disprespectful (I'm talking about official products and adaptations here; I believe that fans should be free to interpret the story and the characters as they prefer limited to fan works).

And a lot of foreigners will never read or watch it because comics and animation have such a huge stigma. Live-action does not have that kind of stigma in the west. Even questionable quality CW live-action superhero shows like The Flash and Green Arrow enjoy more mainstream success than any animated adaption ever will.

It should be noted that, like Wikipedia, anyone can edit IMDB. I think we can say with 100% confidence that all of the info you found on IMDB is fake. There's not even a source attached claiming insider knowledge. It was surely just a user making stuff up. This is actually a pretty common occurrence on IMDB.

Aside from a possible years-old leak of an early draft of episode one and some set photos, there really haven't been any notable leaks for the show. They've kept a pretty tight lid on it, and if all of that info on IMDB was real it would have been part of an absolutely MASSIVE leak that surely would have been noticed elsewhere.

Most people don't watch/read One Piece because of it's length, not because it being an animated work drives people off. And it still doesn't change being one of the most popular franchises of all time.

Yeah like I said in my comment the information could be fake. Especially the episode length, but I'm just trying to speculate given the information publicly available. I think the episode titles have a higher likelihood of being accurate, I mean if I was making an 8 episode version of the East Blue Saga that's pretty much how I'd break the story down. Like you said it could be fake but I find it way more fun to speculate

Didn't a bunch of info leak and everyone said the whole show was a disappointing mess that left test audiences confused? Not surprising if theres only 8 episodes a season. Imagine trying to cram Wano into 2 episodes.

That was a fake leak from a clout chaser James Gunn called out as a liar.

It's inevitable. A lot of stuff in One Piece just would not fly in America, With the anime people can dismiss it as a foreign work, but for an American based production it's has to comply with American moral standards and legal requirements. Not that I agree with the changes, but I'm sure everyone knew things were going to have to be changed.

They couldn't get proper Ghost in Shell or Death Note live action to work which had better chance since they had much more grounded setting.

With One Piece, I just cant imagine it without looking very cringy.
There are things animations can do that just doesn't work in live action, it biggest reason why I'm in to animation in the first place.

I think it would take almost 20-30 years to make all of One Piece live-action, so I don't think it is so wrong to say that this is the last chance. It already took 7 years to make season 1. Even assuming subsequent seasons won't take that long, it will take decades.
If this fails and the next one is live-action, it could take another 10 years. The average life expectancy of a Japanese male is 86 and Oda is now 48. He could be in the 70s when the live-action series is completely finished.
