I hope Anno-sensei takes that break and gives his wife some good material for an Insufficient Direction sequel Laughing

He's worked hard all his life, sounds fair to me.

I remember reading years ago something about making a full adaptation of the Nausicaa manga (Iirc, it was done in jest, alas) and I thought it would be awesome. Nausicaa and Evangelion have some things in common and Anno has a nice, slow style of direction that's perfect for the seriousness of Nausicaa's manga. But he seems to enjoy directing live action these days.

Oh, well. He deserves to do whatever he wants, including not working for a while.

He seriously needs one break not only after finishing Evangelion for real but also made that Kamen Rider film.

I don't recall the Nausicaa thing being in jest, it was just completely informal. During 2020, Nausicaa had a rerun with record viewership, which again prompted the question. Iirc, someone at Ghibli (not Miyazaki) dodged by saying Anno was busy but that they would be open. Personally, I think this is what his next project has to be. He's revisiting a world he worked on before and capping off his career with it. In addition he doesn't need to worry about writing an ending (such was difficult with Eva). Not to mention how good Nadia was and that Ghibli and Khara co-produced a Nausicaa-themed short. It's absolutely ideal and I'm dying for it to happen.

I think the live-action works were a nice break for him, I don't think there's any reasonable way he's done with animation forever. He was reliving his childhood. Yamato has already been redone, though.

I've wondered if he'll ever go back to TV anime -- the last TV series he wrote or directed was KareKano, 25 years ago. And he hasn't really worked on an original IP, in any medium, since Eva.

@Cmdr_Pirx

I would totally be down for a Shin Nausicaa...

his involvement with the Evangelion franchise is over, although he welcomes others creating Evangelion-related stories.

I read something like this and think how awesome it would be if someone were to adapt the Re-Take doujinshi (the all-ages version, of course). I realize it'll never happen, but it'd still be a wonderful what-if.

I would love to see Anno do something truly new. Since 2004's live-action Cutie Honey his output--while amazing--has essentially been nothing but remakes or retellings of existing properties.

With the pandemic, global climate change, and the war in Ukraine, the timing is perfect for a full adaptation of the manga... Its themes have never been more relevant.

Why does everything he might work on start with "Shin"?

Sorry if it's obvious to everyone else, but I don't know the answer.
