Satoshi Kon's films are proof of his life and passion. Sadly, he never got to achieve more, but what we have left are gifts.
Well said, brought a tear to my eye.
It's nice to see Millennium Actress getting some attention and I hope it'll find a new audience out there now it's on streaming as it's a great movie.

This was the first thing I saw at my college's anime club freshman year. Even though it was 2004 I had felt like anime had been in the mainstream forever. Kon certainly sat my ass down and shut it up, and I left the building in love with anime again.
All this time later, I'd argue that this was his greatest work.

It doesn't matter how often I see this film: I WILL start bawling when Genya tearfully assures Chiyoko that surely the painter is waiting for her still, and Chiyoko admits that would be nice, but maybe it doesn't matter: It's chasing after him that she really loves. I get teary just thinking about it. I have no idea why that scene has such an impact on me, but it's the most emotional scene in the movie for me.

Still my all-time favorite anime film, and one of my favorite films period. So nice to see it covered in a more light-hearted column like this!

I have seen all of Kon's films. Each one has blown me away in one way or another, but all have left an impact on me. Millennium Actress told a story of a life and the cameraman & interviewer go along for the ride. The audience does too and what ride it is. I got swept up in the story and Kon's visual style makes it work so well.
Kon had so much more to give but what we have is a hell of a gift.

I don't think any film has meant so much to me as Millennium Actress. I actually teared up at a local screening of the film a few years ago.
Your observation on Otaki brings up an interesting point. For as much as Millennium Actress is a love-letter to cinema, Kon doesn't overlook the more toxic elements of the film industry.
