This show is so niche. Like most people have any idea who these returning people are unless they have played the trails saga.

Annoys me because all they had to do was rewrite Sky into a show. It's basically a book worth of info. Now it'll appeal only to fans of the series...which generally means limited audience, no hope of getting more.

I'm wondering how much of the English cast they'll get back. I could see them using the CS4 recasts.

Mate. They already did that. Besides, this is for the fans more than anything. Its like saying "They should've adapted Masoukishin before adapting SRW OG proper" back with Divine Wars or asking why they did OG:The Animation before OG1. Sometimes, that's not what they want to do.

Who needs more? If they can tell their story within 13 episodes, that's all they need. The Trails series has been a multi-media project since the second game was released. They have stories that only appear in games, manga, light novels, drama CDs, and now anime.

As for how it'll only appeal to fans of the series... do you actually know that? Does getting introduced to characters you aren't familiar with ruin your enjoyment of series that don't have a source material? Trails of Cold Steel was designed as an entry point for newcomers, and they could easily be doing the same seeing as the main cast are original characters.

Also, adapting a video game that is build around its large cast of unique NPCs, its world building and the intricate writing that sets up plot points six games ahead of itself sounds like a much worse move than a one and done season of anime.

If I'm understanding the show's premise right, they're sending in an original cast...to investigate the main characters from Cold Steel, starting from zero knowledge.

As an introduction to the overall series, this actually stands a better chance of drawing in new people than a badly rushed/abridged adaptation of canon material.

Considering it's Crunchyroll I worry we'll have a repeat of what happened to Mob Psycho where some of the actors don't return. Hopefully that doesn't happen.

Mate, that was not a good adaptation. I've seen it. I know it's more for the fans...which is why it's niche. Tis what I said.

I'll likely enjoy it, don't get me wrong - but i'd have preferred the game's stories over what will be essentially a side story. But I doubt it'll be attractive to an outside audience. Maybe I'm wrong. I guess we'll see if this totally new tale can hold a candle to the games. It's like telling the side story of some random character in a book. We want to see the main characters...and the book. Not a new group of folks.

I've wanted to get into the Trails series so many times but it feels like every time a new game comes out and the series gets longer. I was gonna watch this anime but once it was revealed to be a midquel I figured it won't have much appeal to me

It's not like telling the side story of some random character in a book. It's like telling a new story in that universe, which is what every new arc has done. Lloyd, Rean and Van Arkyde didn't appear in games before their introduction.

The ironic thing is that you're saying this is more for the fans, yet you're literally saying that, as a fan, you want an adaptation of the original material and that you want the cast you're already familiar with instead of a team of newbies. Do you not see the contradiction in this?

It can seem daunting at first, but it's really not all that bad. Just pick up Trails in the Sky and continue from there. It's currently on sale for $10 on Steam, so there's almost no investment.

Not sure if it will make you feel better, but the series has been going downhill for awhile, so maybe its better that you didn't pick it up.

There is no contradiction because I was just talking generally about what I believe a lot of fans would like to see. But fans like me will watch anyways. I even said as much as we'll be the ones excited for the returning cast.

New folks on the other hand might be drawn in by a one off story. You were the one to argue that a brand new story would be better than an adaptation. My annoyance stems from the knowledge of the series - which has so much existing story to tell...and pretty good story...I think it should be an adaptation to bring folks in. Build the story up like the games did. Heck, just do Cold Steel's storyline like you said. I just think this new anime is needlessly trying something that new people are going to watch and realize there is a lot of stuff in the background that they won't understand because they didn't play the games. It'll be hard not to reference stuff without tons of exposition. And that's generally not good.

I could be wrong. It could be a masterclass of weaving in a new story with old lore. But those are truly rare.

Objectively bad take. Even if you think the last game was utter trash, it doesn't erase the first 2-3 arcs that were almost universally beloved. By that logic, if the game started trending uphill for the next few games, then your opinion here would be obsolete.

Guess we will have to disagree. Saying that my take is objectively bad is just nonsense by the way because that is just not how it works. Azure was amazing and many people will say it has been going downhill since. The Cold Steel games are liked by many and also hated by many. Kuro 1 was decent while Kuro 2 was damn near garbage level. And of course if the games get better then my opinion would change, but as of right now they are not. Hopefully Kuro 3 is great and everything after is as well, but like many im not getting my hopes up.
