According to anidb the documentary is twice the length of the movie. That and the full length storyboards might make it worth buying even if the film itself is only 40 minutes.

So did they just cancel the theatrical release? Was really looking forward to seeing it on a big screen, this sucks

They did because of the short length.

I think it should be noted that GKIDS were aware of the film's short runtime and said in their initial announcement that it was gonna screen in theatres alongside a making-of documentary and other bonus content. Those plans clearly changed or fell through for whatever reason though.

Actually the film is about 38 minutes including the intro and ending-more like a slightly longer ova.
