The real challenge for Alternate Universes is establishing a strong sense of place. G-Gundam, Gundam Wing, Gundam X, Turn-A Gundam, and Gundam SEED all felt tangible and grounded even without UC context. They felt lived-in, especially that period of G through Turn-A. (SEED could have done more to showcase its world of mixed Federations.) I felt like AGE's and 00's worlds were uneven and a little disjointed; IBO's world was worse than uneven and not very fleshed out at all on screen. This one seems like it has given snippets of a world in the prologue, but there has to be a progression to make it feel real. The little details about cyborgs in the preview gives me some hope that it's going to explain its world's mechanical integration at least. The key challenge for AUs is making it feel like Gundam, not just a random mecha show, while also making itself distinct. It's a tricky thing.
I think the mecha designs are middle-of-the-road and the character designs really need a strongly defined world to justify their existence, because right now I'm not feeling them at all. The animation looks well done, though. But right now I'm just left with this overall first impression of "blah" for the project.

What can casual fans do in order to catch up on the jargon and exposition?

Probably when the series starts simulcasting in October.

tye advamtage ibo had was that it's universe feel like those scifi stories set in a gritty mars, like gundreams and other similar works. so it did not need to create a place for the viewers that had 3xoerience with That setting.

There is literally nothing redeeming about this new series from how this article paints it. The "plot" is utterly Cringe.
(And "intergalactic"???)

The article 'literally' states: "The music and animation are top notch, so expect powerful, intense mecha fighting scenes" which sounds like something redeeming to me?

The plot is pretty standard Gundam--not sure what you were hoping for if you find that "Cringe." Humanity finds new hope for the future by living in space, but is held back by legacy institutions and/or the petty infighting of oligarchs and tyrants who launch an attack on a secret facility; enter a young child who can inexplicably operate a giant mech and fights off a bunch of people, as we come face to face with the psychological and emotional cost of war. It's the same basic plot as the start of MSG, SEED, and Unicorn.
