Was it specified if it was a 1-shot connected to a specific arc already? Just curious if it'll be more of one of the four established God arcs or its own thing in the same universe.

When they mentioned Fushigi Yuugi, I immediately assumed it would be about the Suzaku cast. Totally slipped my mind there are casts for the other gods as well.

Is there any way to convince Viz to simulpub Watase"s manga chapters as they come out?
I'm hoping for that, too. It was such a great series! |

Finally! Another classic manga/anime title that will have a continuation of the story, no matter the format is (one-shot, a chapter, or a whole manga volume. In this case, one-shot!). Like everyone else's sentiments, I do hope that the mangaka is doing well or at least, have an assistant during this time. I would love to see the whole Four Gods series that Watase-sensei wants, to be completed.

The magazine's twitter account posted this: https://twitter.com/flowers_edit/status/1464252962155339777/photo/1
I think the blurb for the one shot mentions getting to see Miaka and Tamahome again? But wow, advertising for a one-shot to be published in September of next year...fans are still facing a looooong wait for this new content. |

So a one-shot that brings the entire saga to a close? Okay.

Watase already confirmed in their personal Twitter account that the one-shot won't be related with the Byakko arc:

Shoujo Beat also confirmed that she still used she/her in English, though Watsase might have said something else since then (feel free to correct me!) |

This is exactly why we have been using she/her pronouns for Watase. As far as we know nothing has changed in the last two years regarding this, but we welcome readers to send us any updates if they have any (note email is still the best way to get in touch with our news team, instead of forum comments). |

As much as I love Yuu Watase why create a one shot instead of continuing on Byakko Senki. It's quite a disappointment, the manga has been on hiatus for more than 4yrs now :/
I hope this means that she'll continue with Byakko arc without delay. But I'm still hoping she's recovered and is doing well ~ health wise.. |

I am too... Disappointing as it may, I think the publishers need to address the "health issue" thing already. I mean every time a mangaka will go on hiatus, it's always health issue (no illness specified). And more than 4years of health issue? As in she's not recovering (well, they're not updating the fans)? I mean, honestly, not trying to sound inconsiderate, but its just not believable anymore... Yoshihiro Togashi was said to be diagnosed chronic back pain, at least he promised the fans he'll definitely return to finished HxH, the reason is more believable too... Makes me also wonder why they wont do what Toriyama Akira is doing right now, like just stay being the author then have an apprentice/assistant do the rest of art for him (Toriyama has Ooishi Nao and Toyotaro), this way they can progress, and once their story is finished, they can retire if they want... |

I agree that publishers need to address the "health issue" thing as well, but not in the way you mean. Drawing at the rate and complexity required of manga artists creates an enormous physical strain that often never really goes away. Hunching over a desk can create back problems that are debilitating for the rest of your life, as can the repetitive stress injuries caused by drawing without taking time to rest and stretch. There are also mental health problems, like burnout and depression, which Watase has spoken quite frankly about suffering from. Japan is not a country that treats people with these issues with kindness and understanding. Manga artists work under a schedule that does not allow them to properly care for themselves. Most don't have time to eat well, sleep sufficiently, or have time for any kind of recreation or social life. Publishers need to address this not by cracking down but by improving conditions so that "health problems" aren't as endemic to the industry as they have become. I desperately want Watase to return and continue Byakko. Fushigi Yugi was unbelievably formative to me as a fan and as a person, and I still love it with all my heart. However, if her taking care of herself means she never draws another page again, I'm at peace with that. I only want the best for her. |
