This guy probably watched way too much "Battle Royale".

I'm glad it turned out okay and no one was hurt before the assailant was arrested.

The attack occured after he stated he'd support the Communist Party during a TV interview. Relation still speculative though.
[edit]
According to Japan Today, it's more likely a case of crazy fan who felt ignored by his idol.

I'm glad the great Beat Takeshi is safe and the culprit was caught. Were they aware that was Beat Takeshi in the car or simple coincidence? As someone else mentioned in the thread, Battle Royale, which is what I thought of and noticed the article didn't mention that as one of his known roles.

I mostly know of him from the game Takeshi's Challenge that Jontron covered. However I'm glad that he's okay. People are crazy, man.

It really speaks to his range that people here can't even agree what he's "known for."
I'm mainly a fan of him as a director and don't even like him being called "Beat" Takeshi much.
"Beat" was his comedy name, that also oddly fits his switch to gritty Yakuza and other violent characters in acting roles.
...But the director of thoughtful art films like Dolls, Kikujiro, and Hana-bi.... I think of that guy as Takeshi Kitano.
