Glad to see NEO did well. I wasn't sure how many people would take to it, since the original TWEWY wasn't a huge hit

Although NEO TWEWY debuted at no. 1 those numbers don't look so good, I don't think SE marketed the game very well, it had barely any presence at E3 and not even Nintendo or Sony highlited in their presentations. I'd say we should wait and compare it with the sales in the West, but in the UK it debuted on 10th place, and that was just the Switch version despite Sony being more popular there.
Even with all the good reviews the game got I feel like SE didn't particulary care about the game, I mean the original came out almost 15 years ago and even though the original got a re-release a couple of years ago and an anime adaptation just recently, SE can't seem to give the same importance to small games like NEO compared to their AAA titles. I hope it sells well, but despite the good word of mouth and all the talk in social media, I don't think the game was well marketed like other anime-styled JRPGS like Persona, Tales or even Scarlet Nexus. |

poor start for TWEWY, just further confirms that making more was just for the western world (probably also why it was revealed at a western event and also had such an early simulcast announce), starting to think Square should just focus on the west and make domestic gaming an mobile only aftertought

I'm confused, TWEWY debuts at #1 and that's still not enough? I think for a sequel that's pretty impressive.

Rankings don't mean much. The game only sold ~30k across both Switch and PS4. For comparison, the original game did 80k in its first week, before selling a total of 192,000 units. It's unlikely Neo TWEWY hits the original's first week total, much less its lifetime sales in Japan. That's a weak result for a modern console game from a major publisher that had a TV anime for publicity. |

But also consider that these rankings only include physical sales, digital distribution didn't even exist when the original TWEWY came out, and nowadays digital sales are usually higher than physical sales. While Neo's total sales are probably less than Square-Enix was hoping for, it's likely about in line with the original game. |

It's extremely unlikely the game sold more digitally. Japan's console game market is still dominated by physical sales, especially when it comes to single-player RPGs. Reportedly, Neo TWEWY isn't breaking the trend in Japan. It didn't crack the top 10 eShop sellers, falling behind games out for several weeks. There's a reason most RPGs tend to have really poor legs in Japan: by the end of their second week, pristine used copies will have flooded the market. Naturally, this would discourage people from buying them digitally. |
