I want to apply, I qualify for most of the stuff(except speaking Japanese) but they probably won't want to hire a 16 year old...

Oh, I actually do have experience with journalism. This means I can apply! But I I'm only a high school sophmore and I doubt I could work full time without missing school.

Yeah Chris and I already had that conversation. All we have to do is wait for the right moment.

Funny how they bold the specific word Reliability in the job listing
Goes to show that not everyone is up for the job in the anime world =P

With that, so does the number of disappointed teens who thinks they can write good.
I'm not trying to be discrimating toward teenagers, and I am one myself, but it's a bit naive to assume that you have even a remotely good chance of getting the job unless you're an experienced journalist (read: college degree + work experience), or just a darn good writer.

Actually, we already have some extremely acceptable candidates. However I'm going to be in Japan for the next two weeks, and I need to be around to show the new person the ropes, so since I can't have them start till I get back, I may as well leave the application window open.

I know, I told my friend this over myspace, she's 14, and she totally sent one in, or she told me she did and I just laughed and said she wasn't going to be anywhere near qualified to be posted. Just shows you how stupid we teens be.

Quote: | Term: Full time, contract, semi flexible schedule. Must be available to start work at 8am Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday. After 8am, schedule is flexible. Work from home. |
Indication number 1.
Quote: | Pay rate: $24k + Annual salary will be a minimum of $24,000. Base salary will be determined by qualifications and skill set. Monthly bonuses on top of base salary. Vacation time, computer allowances and approved expenses paid. |
Very appealing.
Quote: | Job description / Responsibilities: The associate news editor will be responsible for identifying, writing and following-up on news stories of interest to North American and international anime and manga fans. The associate news editor will answer directly to Anime News Network's editor in chief but will also be expected to work with other editors. |
Indication number 2.
Quote: | Requirements:
Degree in journalism or a related field and/or equivalent experience; |
Indication number 3.
A given so I'll exclude it out.
Quote: | A “nose for news”; AP style writing skills; Well organized and detail oriented; Ability to think and work independently; |
I see this coming.
Most definetly needed.
Quote: | Aptitude to understand and quickly observe editorial trends. |
Indication number 4.
Quote: | Additional Skills that will be viewed positively:
• Ability to read Japanese; |
Doable.
Quote: | • Located in or near New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas or Houston; |
Limited.
Quote: | • Prior experience working with anime or manga; |
This is a given also.
Quote: | • Prior experience writing about entertainment media; |
Limited number 2.
Quote: | • Willingness to travel to at least 1 anime convention per year; |
Indication number 5.
Quote: | • Basic HTML skills. |
Given number 3.
What I wrote for the indications is what I think will prevent teenagers especially in high school from getting this job. Doesn't mean I think that is what ANN will do, they're doing the hiring not me. Since this is a salary job, this will have to be a person who is open with their line of work so they can adhere to the hours that Chris is asking for.

Interesting I've got my degree and have been doing graphic design, web design, and editing for a few anime fan sites now for two years. I think I'll put my card in the hat and see if I can get this great job.

Exciting, I am really looking forward to see how this person might take the news to the next level. Specifically after Tempest noted that he would like to see a newspaper style where main news hit the front page and then there are other sections of news that might not be directly related to anime but close enough.

I take it that the position has been filled then, given the removal of the notice on the Staff Openings page?
