I wonder how long the break will be. 6 months to a year would drastically alter the direction of this saga. Makes me think the writers are going to abandon their ideas and go back to a traditional series.

Wouldn't be the first time. Their plans for Best Wishes were completely altered following the 2011 earthquake.

Why would the writers be forced to change their ideas because of COVID-19? A "traditional" series would be just as affected by a delay.

I was thinking sooner or later One Piece will probably be in the same boat, having to delay new episodes for a while because of the coronavirus lockdown.

Well, Tanaka (Luffy's VA) confirmed on her blog that the recordings have been stopped. It's only a matter of time.

I wasn't following the anime at the time, what kind of alterations are we talking about here? Just delays or direction/production changes?

I mean this series is probably the best one to get delayed since it's completely episodic and doesn't really have much in the way of a plot or story and is mostly a comedy. It's not like the Best Wishes incident where they had to cut the Team Rocket VS Team Plasma episode which they were building up to and then ignore as if nothing happened which threw off the writing for the rest of the series.

It's not the first that the Pokemon anime got delayed but maybe this time will be longer due to the gravity of the current events.

I forget how long of a delay there was, but the story had been bulding up to a Team Plasma vs. Team Rocket battle that would have involved damage to a city, which I think would have aired within a week of the earthquake, and said episode was dropped and the resolution to the arc never happened. They did end up reusing a little bit of the animation and ideas near the end of the series in a completely different manner.

To be more precise, the episode that was cut (and forever lost) was going to show us the start of a new overarching plotline involving Team Plasma. Due to the nature of the disaster, the writers ended up scrapping the entire plotline, including a good handful of important future episodes, causing them to have to rewrite the rest of the series. Team Plasma never appeared again until closer to the end of BW, where they wore their B2W2 outfits and their ambitions were less "destructive".
