I love this series in a way I wasn't ever sure I'd be able to love an anime series again, after so many years of watching and analyzing and talking about it. The art here is pure, it allows you to fly with the characters and experience the joy of creation while you are explicitly not creating anything yourself. It's...magic.

I'm a huge fan of Yuasa's work. I'm so glad he makes things for us to watch!

This is the first one from the director that I actually really like, and feel like his style actually fits the series. This feels like shiro boko just allowed to do whatever it wants to, and actually focusing on the animation, rather then animation production.

I have only seen the first two episodes but I still really think that the main character is probably on the autism spectrum. It is harder to tell with girls, but she comes across as someone who has an affinity for background art and that everything comes back to that or other parts of animation.

I really get her fascination with the architecture of her town, it is one of the best touches of the directors style I think.

It's interesting that the show has such a focus on mechanical design when anime in general has pretty much abandoned those. There's no mech show this season (and if there was one it'd almost certainly be terrible anyway) and the sci fi shows don't really feature many machine.

Zac: are you posting episodes 2 and 3 together next week? I am saying this because episode 2 aired like 5 days ago.

Mm, pretty much my thoughts when they were talking about designing the dragonfly ship in the first episode.

"I mean, it's probably just going to end up being CG anyway..."

Trying to think of the last mecha anime we had that didn't use CG robots. Franxx?

Granbelm was the only none Sunrise show I've seen in awhile.

I've been greatly enjoying this series so far, and the three main characters go a long way in contributing to that. You can really feel Midori and Tsubame's passion for animation through their dialogue and their elaborate fantasy sequences, and I also like how Sayaka serves as the one who keeps the other two grounded despite her sardonic, money-grubbing personality.

Also, apparently this story takes place thirty years in the future? A calendar in the first episode shows that the year is sometime in the 2050s, and the school cafeteria has that whole card-swiping thing for ordering food. I wonder if that'll factor into the plot somehow.

I hope someone tells Bill Watterson about this series. It's Calvin and Hobbes go to high school --- especially episode three.

It's also good to see Kanamori get swept up into the flights of imagination.

And I wonder what is going to develop out of the difference in wealth among the three protagonists. There's a lot of hints that this is going to become more than just a source of Lupin-homage chase scenes.

And granbelm mech weren't very mechanical (both in design and in story), similar for franxx. Maybe abandoned is too strong a word, but it's very clear that anime in general is going away from mechanical design. Heck at this point there might be more show about girls being some form of mechanical contraption (boat/plane/tank/gun) than show prominently featuring machine in any given year.

I LOVE this show. In episode one, I especially loved the conceit of the dragonfly airship: imagination literally taking flight before our eyes. It’s so great to read a review that captures the heart of the story, a review filled with all the joy and passion that I watched unfold on screen. Thanks for that, Zac. I’m so looking forward to going on this journey with you. (And I appreciate you keeping this review to just one episode—there’s so much to say, how could you bundle them all together?)

You'll get both of them today, actually!

I didn't really want to put them all together - and we didn't have our schedule ready until last week, so I decided to catch up with one yesterday and then dedicate today to writing more. Moving forward, you should have the latest review ready on Sunday or Monday. Normally I don't work Sundays - but this show is worth it.

Yeah Granblem was more magical fantasy, closer to Super Robot than Real Robot.

Thanks for this, Zac. The show leaves me with such a high that I want to check out a review to maintain the buzz.
