i always wonder: given how specific these theater releases are, I doubt any non-anime fans would go see them. But since you're always going to be in a theater with anime fans, what's it like? Are people usually toxic?

My experience has been two ways. 1. Basically no one there. Nice and quiet. 2. A ton of people in a con-like situation. Smells and risk of con-plague included. I don't mean to offend, but that's my experience. I've only seen this at mainstream stuff like Fate and Dragonball This will probably be closer to #1 than 2 given what it is. I'm honestly surprised by this. Even though it was one of the best anime of last year and 2nd season should be even better, I haven't seen much hype around it in the West. Unlike Violet Evergarden's side story movie, I won't be upset if Funimation doesn't screen this anywhere near me. Something like this only makes sense in the most limited release. |

Really it's not much different than seeing any other movie in the theater. People are generally quite during the film so you can enjoy it and nobody really bothers anyone. Perk is these screenings are usually at night during the week and more expensive than a usual ticket you don't have people who bring really small children. |

One would think that with Sony Pictures owning most of Funimation, Sony Pictures could use the deep Sony pockets to help Funi titles shown onto more movie screens. When I say this, I am talking about at something like 1500 screens in this country.

I didn't go to any of the US screenings last year (went to one in Japan - packed theater, quiet and respectful audience) but I heard about them from friends who did. Very packed, huge turnout at all theaters I heard about (there was actually a whole thing with them running out of the free merch and having to mail extras to all the people who missed out), a lot of people in cosplay, and VERY loud, yelling and clapping during the screening. People I talked to didn't seem to mind that, liked the fan camaraderie, but I would have hated it lol. Glad I was at a respectful Japanese screening. Maybe people will be less loud this time around, since last time it was basically watching a remake of the first episodes of the 2001 classic, and this time it will be all new never adapted material so people will want to pay closer attention and be less disruptive. But from what I'm hearing in the fandom, the turn out will probably be as big. Furuba has a huge cult nostalgia following, even if it isn't one of the Really Big Name anime in Western circles. |
